Are these tracks griz?
« on: September 24, 2016, 03:59:11 PM »
Hi,

I came across these tracks in the selkirks this weekend.  Look like griz to me from what I've seen online to compare, not positive though.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't see pinky toe and that makes me think black as well.  Granted I'm no pro but size is important too and cant tell size with no scale?  Set of grizz I saw it was obvious based on claw lengths and size was quite large.(Plus bear was seen later)  It very well could be grizzly though.  I would be cautious regardless!

Black bear for sure.  Foot morphology always trumps size. Note the hind foot track in both photos has a wedge of hair on the inside edge.

Black bears tend place their back foot in the print of their front foot making it look bigger then it really is.

why is everyone worrying about size?  are grizzly's born with 12 inch feet?  how big are a 200lb grizzly track? they are mountain grizzly not Kodiak island brown bears that get to be huge!  how big is a 10 year old Selkirk mountain grizzly? i bet most are not as big as you may think!

Not sure on the original photo, I'd tend to lean towards grizz because I normally don't see claw marks at all on blackies.

However on that photo that Bullblaster posted, that's definitely 100% Polar Bear!!!!

The medium that the track was left in has a lot more to do with the presence of claw marks than the species of bear does.  I've seen plenty of black bear tracks with claw marks.

And no, a 2-300 pound grizzly doesn't leave extraordinarily large tracks.

My non expert opinion says grizz
100 % the track on the bottom was made by a human...unless of course the bear has an account with amazon and they drone flighted out a pair of waterproof boots and trousers along with a digital camera and instructions on how to post pics to Hunt Wa...

There's a few grizz in the selkirks, the most resent one was put there on June 29 of 2016. When he was caught he was 5 years old and was 466 pounds. He has a gps tracking collar and a ear tag in both ears. I have several pics of him. Got all the info on him from the U.S fish and game department.

I believe it. Ran into a guy just across the border years ago when I was cutting timber and they had just released a young male. We saw him the next day. Looked around 400 lbs. He hadid a new collar and had no cares in the world we were there.
