Rut time frame this year?
«
on:
September 25, 2016, 11:38:18 AM »
Hey everyone, quick question. I do not archery hunt, so I have not been in the woods and have not seen this seasons activity; however I understand the general concept and dates. Because this years weather has been a bit warm and coming into October we are still seeing 70 degree temps; would any of you believe that we could see rut activity into the first week of muzzy, for both deer and elk. I was looking at the forecast come Saturday, and it's looking like low 45 high 58. And rain. This is something we haven't seen in awhile. Would I be able to chirp, bugle, grunt, rattle something legal into my range?

Elk are always still rutting in early muzzy. Weather might shut them up sooner in the day but they'll still be doing the hokey pokey at night. Blacktail and muleys get frisky in late October and early November, with whitetails a few weeks behind. Warmer weather is a similar factor. It doesn't change the fact that does and cows are in estrus. It does affect how hard the bucks and Bulls can rut during daylight hours.

Saw one yesterday pushing a cow and buglin'. Satellite bull right there for the harassment part of things. Pretty cool to just sit back and watch.

I hunted to the 21st and didn't hear a bugle.probably covered 60 to 70 miles of good country and not a peep. The first year this has happened. ML should do well if they can call well.

It was fairly quiet in a lot of areas I hunted this year. There were days of piping up mostly in the later part of the evenings. But in general, things seemed to be a lot more quiet this year, especially in the lower elevations of coastal regions/units. Along with the weather, being warmer later, clear nights just about every night, good chance the rut was delayed this year IMO. I think you muzzy guys will have a hayday this year.
Good luck

Covered 17 miles by mountain bike on saturday and 2-3 miles on foot in SW last weekend and heard not a peep. Elevation wise, started below 400 to little over 1,200. I have heard from some people they are singing, I just am not hearing it.

If there are cows in estrus in the area/herd you will be on the opener you will likely experience rutting activity. If there is also competition from other bulls you will very likely experience rutting activity. If the elk have not been messed with much than odds are almost certain you will have rutting. The cooler temps are a bonus but very low on my personal list of ingredients. Have fun and good luck!
P.S if you suspect a bull in the area but no "rutting" activity try cold calling setups and BE PATIENT!!

I just came in from my back yard listening to a few bulls going back and forth with eachother.
Sadly my back yard is the skok unit and I have no tag, front yard is satsop unit and no early muzzy season
