Waterfowl semo autos
« on: September 26, 2016, 02:23:00 PM »
This is the year I upgrade guns but I'm a little stuck on what to get.  My buddy loves his a5.  I like the feel of the Winchester sx3.  I'm not sure what the difference is really between gas vs inertia or the benifts of either or.  I'm not afraid to look at the "B" companies either.   Any other recommendations from people?

I'll give a nod to the SX3.  I've put mine through the ringer in all types of conditions.  Dusty, muddy, wet, freezing conditions, it don't matter the thing just keeps on shooting.  They aren't the cheapest ones out there though.

I'll be hopefully trading in 3 guns for 1 new one so I shouldn't have to pay much out of pocket.

Have owned and shot a Benelli and Browning, but sold them for an SX3.  No regrets either, the SX3 is a heck of a gun for the money.

Whichever shotgun you buy, I'd suggest a 28" barrel. If you want to be that guy that has to have the loudest gun in the blind then go for the 24" barrel. If you do upland birds then maybe a 26".

Good point, shorter barrels are loud, same for hunting ported shotguns.

I have been shooting a Browning Silver for 7 plus years and love it, I am 90% sure it is the same insides as the Winchester SX3.  I am pretty sure Browning and Winchester are made in the same facilities now days.

I went with the Browning Maxus. Ejects the lightest dove loads all the way up to the heaviest waterfowl loads. Have not had an ejection failure. Comes with 3 chokes, and shims for the stock to lengthen if needed. I looked at all of them before I purchased, and fell for the Maxus. Great shotgun!

I've got an old SBE, probably 20 yrs old. I upgraded to a Wolfe 25% extra heavy recoil spring. She still ejects dove loads without issues. I vote for SBE

I'm really interested in Remington v3. Can you elaborate. I have read it was supposed to come with shims but now I see it doesn't. Not a deal breaker but would be nice. I also like the sx3 but the v3 seems a little better maybe

I decided to switch to an auto loader two seasons ago. I managed to grab a stoeger m3000 for 500 out the door at Cabelas. I'm not big on shooting 3 1/2 loads, so it only being chambered in 3 isn't an issue. It has little to no recoil, has a shim kit for the stock which is AWESOME. Really helped get it to point right for me. Only issue I've had is my own fault. Trying to close the bolt quietly would keep it from seating all the way. Would only get a click because the firing pin wouldnt connect. The fix is to just let the bolt slam shut under spring power. Other than that, I'm pleased as can be with my purchase.

Don't pass up a good deal on a Beretta a300 or 400. Those guns can shoot. The a300 has been amazing and I have a very nice Belgium SX2 to compare it to. I was super surprised with that fact.

Inertia guns kick a little harder but generally have less moving parts and are easier to clean. They also tend to require less cleaning than gas guns. I will always recommend any of the benelli semi autos. Don't make a decision without shouldering and sbe2 or an m2. I also really like the feel of the Vinci, they just look like hell lol

The MOST important thing in choosing a shotgun is fit.  Handle and shoot all the guns you can get your hands on and pick the one that fits YOU the best.  They all make great semi auto guns now.  I have a Beretta Extrema 2 which is my go to, and a SX3 (backup/buddy gun).  I have shot literally 6 to 7 thousand rounds through my Extrema 2, only problem is replacing a $5 ejector pin and spring once.  I also recommend a 26" barrel if you hunt out of ground blinds.  It points quicker and contrary to what some say, isn't any louder than a 28".  That all depends on the direction they're pointed (with the exception of muzzle breaks).  Good luck on your choice.

D Rock, I shot a RH SBEII for 8 yrs without a hitch. Loved that gun. Bought a LH(no, 2 of them and had both sent back to Benelli). Can't get the LH models to function but I'd certainly recommend a RH model.

That said, I switched last season to a LH Beretta A400 and love it. Cleanest gas gun I've ever seen and shoots light trap loads up to 3.5" heavy turkey loads with the lightest recoil on the market. A hair less $ than an SBEII also. To be perfectly honest, it's a lot more gun for the money and I've got 0 regrets.
If ya get down this way, holler and you can shoot it out to TSC if ya want.
Good luck with whatever you buy.

I haven't played with the V3 as much. It just showed up. I like the feel of it. I have had the V Max for a bunch of seasons. Live it. I expect the same out of the V3 platform.

I picked out a franchi 3 1/2 model.  Has it down to the sx3 or it and went with the inertia system of the franchi vs the gas system of the sx3.  Also saved myself $100 this way.

Picked up a stoager 3500 a few weeks ago pretty satisfied with it so far. Took a bit before it started cycling lighter loads still sometimes have hiccups but vary few. I believe after a solid duck season should have zero issue with it cycling anything. But if you shoot any sort of duck load it's guaranteed to go boom every time. The only upgrade I did which I heard was a good idea was to install the Benelli sbe2 extractor and extractor spring. Little more beafy and better design, it functioned just fine without but it was a fairly cheap upgrade. Highly recommend this gun.

Congrats on the new gun, should kill ducks just fine.  How can you highly recommend the gun though when it has "hiccups" shooting light loads?  Hopefully it won't have any problems after you break it in.  Shoot straight and kill the boy ducks!

Well at least for a waterfowl gun....this gun was ment to shoot the bigger 3.5 magnum shells so cheap lighter loads like 2 3/4 bird shot don't always give the needed recoil for a inertia driven gun. Like I said it's begun to start functioning fine after a good cleaning and couple hundred rounds. For the price point though you can't go wrong, getting a inertia driven gun with Benellis patten technology that will function 3.5 inch shells no problem and even small as  2 3/4 is pretty impressive. Even SBE 2 go through a break in period and can be fussy with functioning those lighter loads. Either way not to concerned sense I do plane on hunting ducks/geese  with it just occasional skeet shoot. That's just my  :twocents: on the gun, and will put it through its paces this weekend :mgun2:

I just got one and ran a box of 3" and then 3.5" and then shot trap loads without any issues. I also had the recoil weight out. I think most people that have the issues with lighter loads not cycling still have the recoil reducer in.

Sorry I missed the reply.  I have never had any issues with cycling.  Also I forgot another friend bought one and did put in the reducer and had issues.  So man up and take it out😀😀😀😀. The recoil is nothing even with 3.5
