Any M1 Garand guys on here?

I recently acquired a Garand and now am trying to figure out what exactly I am going to do with it.  I am a newbie to the old military rifle game and don't know a whole lot about ME or TE guages to see whether the gun has been shot much.  Trying to decide if I want/need to keep it original or if I should cerakote it and shoot it. i.e whether it is worth keeping original for the future.
Thanks for any advice.  If anyone up north has a TE or ME guage I would love to see how it checks out.

I love M1's and M1a's.

You can do the bullet test and take a .30 cal projectile and put it in the muzzle (finger tight) and see how far it goes.

I would NOT coat it. Keep it clean and metal lightly oiled and enjoy it.

Keep it as it is, that it to a local gun smith or another person who can tear it down & do an over all cleaning job on the gun. Then go enjoy HISTORY. They are going up in price and are a big part of our Countries success. With out the m1 Garand I don't think we'd be talking english.

You should be able to get a manual on line. This a battle rifle and are designed to be striped down simply by any GI.

  super easy to take down and put back together.  Just grab the trigger guard and pull out, the rest falls out in sequence (more or less).

Be sure to use a quality grease when doing re-assy.

Do not use oil.

CMP sells ammunition or the online retailers.

I would avoid some of the modern day hunting ammunition and stick to M2 ball or ammunition loaded for the Garand. The modern stuff has a different pressure curve and can be hard on the op-rod.

We used the American Eagle Garand ammunition for the Bull Hill Shootout and had no ammo related issues.

If you reload Win 748,either of the 4895's and 4064 work great. Watch the OAL as the internal box is shorter than the throat will allow.

Yup, no oil use grease.

Maybe a good idea to change the springs on her.  At lease the oprod and clip latch springs.
Orion 7 is one place to obtain springs.
