How to clean the rifle at deer camp
« on: September 28, 2016, 08:10:25 PM »
Hey all, quick question.

Giving hunting with the muzzleloader a try for the first time this year. I was planning to head out and camp for 3-4 days at a time. I'm shooting a traditional style Lyman percussion cap with pyrodex. I've read on the internet that most advise shooting out the load after the days hunt, but also advise to clean the rifle the same day it is fired.

If I am in the middle of nowhere in a tent or sleeping in the back of the truck, what is the best method for cleaning the rifle? Go as far as dragging out there a bucket of soapy water? Is there an acceptable way to chemically clean it? What has been your experience?

Thanks for your insight!

I'm nowhere near as experienced in the blackpowder game as some on here. But if you can be reasonable sure it's dry, I don't think there's any reason to fire if planning to hunt the next day.

Some guys leave a load in all season. Some probably longer than that. If fired, you could run  a brush and some patches with solvent. Probably be better than not cleaning at all, then give it a complete cleaning at home.

I'm sure you'll get better answers, but I survived a few seasons muzzle loading doing that.

Pull your breach plug and push the bullet and powder through.  Dry wipe and reload.  Good to go.

I leave it loaded. If I shoot my trDitional I just run a spit patch or a Windex patch if I'm at the rig.

My inline I just pull the breach plug, knock everything out the back, drY patch it a few times, clean the nipple, and reload it.

He said it's a traditional Lyman. May not have a breech plug.
