Snakes - need some cold weather
« on: September 29, 2016, 10:24:08 PM »
It's to darn warm. I want to get my setter out on some birds after the upland opener but we need some cold nights and cool days to get the snakes in their dens.

I will still stay on my ritual of going into snake areas November 15th or later for fun.

Here's one I killed last week. Shouldn't of been in the area I was working in or it wouldn't of been killed. Glad I didn't find it when I was in the brush.

He looks friendly and just wanted to give you a kiss.

I'm gonna have to stick to grouse until we get some freezing temps. Gonna be a long few weeks waiting.

We knocked one out yesterday in an area that was VERY high in elevation.  he was coiled up in a catatonic state.  He did not even move or hissss when I moved the barrel past his nose.  It was as if he was sleeping.

No snakes for us. And we camp in a spot there should be some.  But it was cold at night. Been looking for one even, want it for my boys hat and to do some snake training with it.

Have heard multiple reports similar to Merkleman's. Snakes out in Chukar country where people have not seen them before.

If I recall this is a very early upland opener so that may have something to do with it.

I don't think the 1st of October came any earlier this year than in the past. :)

Maybe I'm getting forgetful in my old age but I seem to recall upland openers starting around Oct 15th in years past.

Not much you can do. I am from Cali and have encountered westerns and Mohave greens which are very poisonous. My oldest dog is snake broken and seems to know what to do when encountered. My younger GSP would most likely want to play with it and get big. The snake shots help but most hunting breeds can withstand, depending on the snake. At least that's what I have been told by my vet and a herpatologist.

Ran into one myself on opening day.  One more step and eeeyikes!  Managed to get the dog steered away and had plenty of time to do a photo op.  Hopefully now that it's started raining on the east side this little boogers will head for hibernation!

This thread makes my skin crawl.  I hate snakes.  Send me in a berry patch with a gutshot bear, but don't come near me with a snake. >:(
