Winston GMU 520
« on: October 02, 2016, 05:11:09 PM »
Late archery out in Winston.  Was wondering if anyone else will be hunting the gmu for elk this year?  Will probably put in a few scouting days before season set up a camera or two.  Anyone wanna team up and check it out before season.? Or any surrounding GMU lots of good area down south.

I hunted some DNR land in 520 last year for elk. Man, that was a bust. Only saw a little whitetail fawn and a big pumpkin patch. They may be in that unit but not where I was. Good luck.

Yea idk about 520 I know that weyco owns about half the property on the unit, elk will probably head Into it when the pressure gets good. My only debate was buying the rec pass to have someone just drive by me and not see squat. Might take my chances and head up to 667 Eastside, or northwest part of the unit. Hunting partner bailed on me halfway thru early season.  Probably be out there myself for late season archery.  For sure be out there 23rd thru that Monday, then back out the last two weeks of elk. So hopefully get three good weeks of solid hunting.

Thanks for the opportunity brew.  Unfortunately I didn't have a chance at buying a Vail pass. Sold out faster than heck. Planning on checking out whatever chunks of dnr over by your area there. Maybe next year Ill be lucky enough for a pass. How is the snow out there for late? Want to be a little prepared for it. Thanks -jesse

Just got back from my scouting trip down in Winston.  Didn't see anything, no sign even. Took one of the gated roads that felt good went with it.  Good amount of sign that I found.  Lots of rubs in this area, tree after tree. Saw good amount of elk droppings, but definitely newer deer sign.  Going to probably set my camera next time I go and leave it for next year's Intel.  Will be back to check this spot out in two weeks.  Ran into another hunter said he hadn't seen anything but idk feels good to me.

if you are gonna hunt the 520 unit concentrate on the western areas lower in elevation close to the private lands. you will find more elk activity in these areas especially if you concentrate on the thicker areas of public land adjacent to private

Will be down there for late season opener for a whole week and plan on hitting it hard.  Got my camp spot all squared away and hope to be out everyday and walk out with headlamps. Will check out the western side of the unit as much as I can, but will try to hit the lowlands more in the middle of the unit. Like I said I'll have time and I'll check out lots of new terrain.

Last day of work, then off to Winston and set up for the week. Super stoked and can't wait to be out in the woods. God willing we will be successful and have fun. Good luck to everyone.
