Lowa Tibet gtx hi
« on: October 04, 2016, 11:54:25 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with these boots? I've been looking at boots and these are my top right now. Any positives or negatives?

I have the Ranger GTX and will likely never need another boot, or at least not for a very long time. If I do, I'll purchase Lowa again.

These are a pretty stiff boot.  Great for rugged, rocky, steep country.  They are a mountaineering platform, so they aren't going to be as comfortable and quiet on flatter terrain.

The Rangers are a trekking boot and have a more flexible insert.  I think they are a very good compromise for all around use, I wear mine for chukar hunting and they hold up well.  The Ti Cam is also an excellent boot, somewhere between the Tibet and Ranger in terms of stiffness.

I have the non "hi" model.  I really like them.  The sole is very stiff.  Great for hiking, not great for bowhunting.  You dont "feel" twigs beneath your feet or its hard to move nimbly.  For ankle and rock support they're great.  I feel like traction on things like logs is tough due to the stiff sole, but traction on loose rocks or whatever is great for the same reason.

They're very waterproof and durable.  I've been very happy and would buy again.  The laces seem to break, maybe I tie them too tight, but you can buy those Kiwi brand replacement laces pretty easily and they work just fine (the yellow and brown ones).  I now keep an extra set of laces in my pack.  The little lace catch that keeps the lower portion tight has a tendency to wear on the laces.

I always wear them with two layers of socks and haven't had too bad of blister issues with them (and I blister VERY easily).

All in all, I don't think I'd buy the high top model due to their stiffness, but for durability and longevity they're hard to beat I think.  I will likely buy again if I manage to wear these ones out.

Unless you're sure you need that stiff of boot and that much ankle support I'd look towards the Caminos or Ticam II's. Both are stiffer than the renegades but softer than the Tibets. I bought Camino's for to swap out some old insulated Cabellas brand Danners that I have. Even though they are a shorter boot I still have all the ankle support I need, they are plenty stiff for the steep uphill climbs with loose dirt/gravel, and most importantly they are about 1/2 lb lighter per boot than my old high top boots. Unless I draw a sheep or goat in really demanding country, I wont be getting another pair of boots in the 4+ pound category again. When you put tons of miles on your feet, in steep country, you'll notice in a hurry how much nicer it is to not have an extra 1/2 pound on your foot for each step you take.

I just purchased a pair of the " regular" height. If looking to add to the stable, i think they are a great addition. If your wanting a "do all" boot, depending on your needs it is likely that other options may be better suited.

Pros. Excellent ankle support, very h20 resistant, roomy toe box, great traction, lacing system very nice. Appear well constructed but will need more miles before making a judgement on that. Reputation is good.

Cons. Stiff. Due to the situation I was in, these boots went from box to climbing with no break in. My feet stayed dry, that was the intent. And I didnt have ant blisters after alot of miles. However i did pre tape, and I tend to have tolerant feet though so i would reccomend a solid break in as these are not out of box comfy. At least for me.
Heavy. Pay a price for durability and reliability and that penalty comes in the form of weight. Although not heavy for their class per se, they are significantly heavier than many boots that could possibly perform a similar function.
Slippery when wet. Great traction in loose soil, mud and shale. But beware wet logs and rocks. Beware anyway, but these seemed even more so due to the stiff sole and hard vibram.
Hot. If hunting in warmer temps i would tend to shy away from these.
Insole is junk. Typical of high end boots, just be aware.

Again it depends on your needs. Bad weather with alot of steep climbs, sidehill, and possibly heavy packs. This is gonna do awesome. Break them in well before hand if possible and do work. Even better if its rifle hunting.

Bowhunting more moderate temps, weather, or terrain and it may be more boot than you need.

I had a question about sizing on these. Do they compare more to scarpa which run 1\2 a size small based on test fitting or more true to size like Crispi or Kenetrek.

The waterproofing on my regular height tibets went from amazing to leaking like a sieve this season, overall the boots are still in excellent condition and other than leaking I loved them, but I am now on the hunt for yet another boot to try.

Just ordered a pair from REI, 20% off right now. Tried on some rangers to try to get sizing right the first time. Gonna add super feet guide insoles when they come in on Thursday.

A friend of mine had some that leaked horribly the second day he wore them.  He was able to exchange them.   It's weird because I've owned three pairs of  Lowa boots and none have leaked (different models).
