Good Start

Opening day pheasant on the 24th was fun.  My setter had six points in half an hour, so I was pointing my finger at them and going bang after my limit in 15 minutes.  Need to let some go next time to stretch it out a bit longer.  Fun morning!

A Damascus hammer gun?  Now there is a man with some taste!!!!

Thanks - that's my Husqvarna mod. 44 16ga hammer gun with barnard damascus barrels.  Made about 1896.  Very rare, only one of it's kind that I know of, although I have several other Husky hammer guns. Husqvarna made great guns.   I have to shoot no-tox reloads in it at the release site.

My father in law has a couple hammer guns, but they aren't Damascus.  He has a Holland & Holland that's super cool, but not as cool as yours.  Great to see some people not afraid of Damascus and keeping the old guns around.

Hammer guns are addicting.  I have a few others, and they are the only guns I own.  My others are steel barreled Husky's, another 16 and a couple 12's.  Nothing to be worried about with damascus, as long as wall thickness is good.

Any problems with modern ammo in your shotgun?  What pressure level do you hold your reloads at?    It is a nice looking gun.   I should ask, are your reloads with smokeless powder, if black powder that answers my questions about pressure levels.

None. I reload to reasonable levels, say 7-8k psi or so,  with modern smokers powder, usually longshot. The peak pressure curve is roughly the same as BP. Pressure is pressure regardless.  As long  as minimum wall thickness is good, there is nothing to worry about using Damascus with mild to moderate loads.  I know guys with very thick barreled Damascus duck guns, and they shoot baby mags in them. You just have to be smart about it.

I agree with Feather.  However, chances of buying low pressure loads at the local store are nearly impossible.  Most modern loads are much higher pressure, so you really can't guy buy typical over the counter loads.  Also, many of the older guns are short chambered, so you have to take that into consideration as well.  As long as you keep the pressures low like Feather said, there is no problem.
