What to do to make euro mount but has velvet scraps on it?
« on: October 05, 2016, 07:39:07 PM »
So got my first branched bull.  :IBCOOL: doing a euro mount myself. The issue is it has some strong leathery velvet scraps left on the antlers that i cant get off. I like it on there but cant clear coat the antlers like i normally do if I leave it on there. And I dont know if it will dry up and be ok if I just leave it? not sure. What should I do. Its on the backside of the antlers and over the tips.

Pete,
The remaining velvet will be fine to be left where it is, if that's what you desire. The large majority of the velvet is gone meaning that the remaining bit will dehydrate and dry where it is, if it isn't already. Remember though, its organic material, so if you get it wet or damp its going to start rotting, so during your process of cleaning and degreasing the skull ensure you don't get it wet. If you have the space a good choice would be to put the horns/skull in the freezer, uncovered/unbagged for at least 3 days, it will help dry (freeze dry) the velvet even more AND it will kill any fly larvae that may have been deposited in the upper parts of the horns under the velvet, which sometimes occurs. Best of luck

it is clearly hard horn the velvet is dried there and it is not alive. if you want it on there then leave it if you don't then soak in water and strip it off and stain it. congrats on your first branch bull.
