Knife sharpener

Just wondering what everyone like to use to sharpen there hunting knives. I'm trying to find something I can put in my pack and use at home as well.

At home I use a Ken Onion work sharp , all my pack knifes have been replaced with a Havalon and an Outdoor Edge with replaceable blades.

Eze-Lap I carry the little brass tube style in the field and keep the 12" oval diamond at home/truck. Dosen't take much to put a razor edge back on. Just have to keep the same angle, once you get the feel it's not too hard. One trick I do if having problems is I'll color the edge with a sharpie, that way I know where I am removing the metal from and if not feeling the drag on the stone clean it. It will get metal built up on the stone, just wipe it with a damp scotts brite.

That sharpie idea is a good one!

Ditto to having a Ken onion Worksharp at home though I avoid replaceable blades.

Start with hard steel, sharpen well and you should have no need to sharpen in the field if you don't cut rocks nor wire, etc.  I carry a small sharpening tool but have never sharpened a hunting knife in the field, and this includes gutting, skinning and breaking down a whole moose with one small Buck lock blade.

In recent years I've carried one of these little triangle sharpeners sometimes (link below) though mostly keep it in my fishing vest to sharpen hooks.  Way better sharpening tool than it appears, one of those deceptively useful low cost items.

Before the triangle item I used to carry a small diamond rod but mine was too coarse so for awhile went to one of the Lansky small ceramic rods that come as a set to place in angled holes in a box.   https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/-Replacement-Ceramic-Rod-for-the-Lansky-Turn-Box-P190C57.aspx  If you happen to have the set, take one rod along in the field to touch up a blade.

Like others have said, the Work Sharp does awesome if your at your place. In my kill kit and in my bino case I carry a outdoor edge, I like the redundancy of 2 knifes. I use 3 blades do a whole elk bone out. Outdoor edge makes an awesome knife.
