The Pay it Forward Muzzy Bull
« on: October 10, 2016, 08:28:26 AM »
Always be curtious and friendly to strangers....you never know who you'll meet on your adventures.

On the second day of muzzy season, my partner and I struck up a conversation with a couple archery hunters. They were just poking around for the day seeing if anyone was having any luck.  We chatted for a few minutes exchanging friendly info about the lack of the bulls talking, and the weird weather.   After parting company,  one of them spotted a cow beded up in jack firs about 1200 yards off a mainline. These guys took the time to came back and find us. Not only did they let us know, they led us to the landing where they spotted her.

Well,  we took out the glass and let the binos eat, picking apart the hillside hole by hole.  Within minutes we found a couple other cows, and after about 15 minutes of glassing we spotted this fella bedded up just away from them. The whole while close to a dozen vehicles unknowingly discounted the hillside.  Hunters proceeded to drive right on buy, not having a clue, they were traveling  within a 1000 yards of elk.
We had a quick planning session and  were off to  execute as a team before one of the passing vehicles relized what was up.

I  stagged myself at the top escape route into the timber with my partner  stagged below a couple hundred yards away.  After what seemed like an eternity I could see his rack moving thru the jack firs about 400 yards out and  headed right for my partner like clock work. Unfortunately,  what didn't work was my partners rifle when the herd moved into his range. He pulled the trigger and I heard the heart breaking sound of a cap going off with no resounding boom of a smoke pole.

Thankfully,  despair didn't last to long as the herd
turned my way and eventually walked to within 80 yards.  When he presented me a slightly quartering away shot I sent the 300gr Hornaday meat missile on its way.  Once the smoke cleared I could see him hunched up hard and knew my shot was true. I got the satisfaction of watching this beautiful bull drop without moving 5 feet from where the bullet pierced his heart.

Now here is the even better part of the story.....Those archery hunters who put us on these elk.  They even came up the hill to help quarter him up and pack him back to the truck. They don't make them like that anymore.

John and Austin,
Don't know if your on the forum but thanks for everything.  We couldn't have got him without you.

I gave them an entire tenderloin and the heart.  They  weren't expecting anything other then the satisfaction of helping someone out.  That's what makes them incredible people.

Nice.  I enjoy hunting karma, good and bad.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
