I have fished almost all of the Washington Rivers that produce big steelies, and a lot on the Clearwater, but I am stil a virgin to the magic 20# barrier.  One at 19#, and the rest were all 16# and under.  I have eaten a lot that went 20+ thanks to my Dad fishing the Cowlitz 4-5 times a week during the runs.

A 20 lb steelhead isn't nearly as common as a lot of folks think.  When you consider that in most watershed it usually takes a 39-40" fish to make the mark, it's pretty tough to do.  There's a fair degree of luck and a lot do to w/ the actual river.  When you start looking at some of the stats that have been compiled on rivers, say like the Thompson... it shows that 20s even there aren't behind every rock like some folks believe.  I seem to recall that the mean weight of the Thompson fish was something like 14 or 15 lbs.  Over the last 20 years, out of hundreds upon hundreds of steelhead I've seen caught I'd guess that 1% make 20 lbs.  Witnessed a gob of 16-18 lbers that were supposed to be way over 20...  :P

In my lifetime I have probably caught 500-600 steelies.  That 1% would be pretty sweet to me.  Actually that number would probably hold true.  About 100 of those fish were from rivers that actually have the ability to grow a big fish.  Everything else was smaller water that didn't hold fish of that size.

not saying there aren't other really good ones around but in this area up here his fish are hard to beat.

That one I posted on #26 ws done by Todd. It was one of the nicest looking steelhead I have caught. It was January on the Tolt and looked like a rainbow with that bright red stripe. I have a pic but it was many years ago and I would need to scan it but it looks just like the mount, he painted it perfect. Like I said the gamie told me it was an Oregon fish and that was their characteristics after being released in the tolt, when they returned they had those bright red stripes. The pic on the wall does nothing for scale but it is a large fish. I would take it down for my daughter to hold but its too high on the wall without getting a ladder in here, too much work right now. :chuckle:

6lbs, 25'' long, Lake Erie, trolling a silver and blue spoon. Also caught a lot of Steelhead fishing on Walnut Creek tributary that goes in to Erie. Never tried here in Wa.

23# hatchery buck , 18# hatchery hen, and 25# Native buck. Native pics don't do this fish justice. He took about 40 minutes to land on 10# test leader.

Shut up and Hunt!

Ain't that the truth.  I think the only reason I haven't broken the 20 Trophy mark is because I always have a tape around to measure the fish.  Been a few that I thought were twenty that ended up at 16 or 17.  Anyways, some very nice fish posted up on this thread.  MuleySniper those are some great mounts your dad has.  I'm jealous!
