Mixing goose decoys?
« on: October 18, 2016, 04:37:11 PM »
So I have a cut corn field that's been holding pretty good numbers of birds the last few days plan to shoot it up tomorrow, but I only have a dozen full body fully flocked lessers that I bought this year. I'd like a few more than that but I only have some old shells. Will mixing those together look took out of the ordinary to get birds to commit?

At this point in the season I would use the shells. But it also depend how old and beat up they are.

Are you planning on hunting in the middle of the field or the edge? Are you planning on using decoy numbers to break up the outlines of the blinds?
If you have good numbers of geese already using the field, I would just use your lessers. The birds are already coming to the field, a few decoys just gives a little confidence.
If you were trying to draw birds to a field they haven't been using, than numbers would be beneficial.

I would use the dozen full bodies.  If your set up where the geese have been, want to be and your concealment is good.  Then the birds should decoy right in.

Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I'm sitting in the field right now waiting for birds to fly. I went ahead and picked up another 6 lessers at sportsman yesterday instead of using those old shells. We are in layouts just tucked in some half dead corn stock. Think we should have no problem I'll try and report back how we do.
