I saw a fallow deer in Vail today.... Shoot or no shoot???
« on: October 23, 2016, 08:08:13 PM »
I was on the 2090 road and ran into a rig parked at a clear cut. They signaled me to stop, and asked me " is that a deer or an elk?" I looked and could not believe what I saw. It was a fallow deer, with the spots and palmated horns. It's a deer... could we have shot it? Definitely not a animal that belongs there. I have a very bad picture, but the people who got the good picture said they would text me the photos they had... don't have them yet, but I promise you, I know what I saw.... Again, shoot or no????

The regs are specific to blacktail, mule deer and whitetail seasons. Not just deer season. I'm not sure what the regs are but I definitely would not shoot it just because it's a deer.

You could shoot it but don't need to put your tag on it.

Should have killed it, exotic deer brought the lice here, that caused the hair loss problems.

There was a fallow buck on Bean road in Rainier a few days ago. My daughter has a pic of it. I was up the 2090 this afternoon. Wish I would have seen it, it would be hanging  in my barn right now. My daughter wanted to shoot it when she saw it. She is asleep now but I will get a pic of it from her in the morning.

Unless it's someone's pet I think someone need's to drop that thing! I would report it to WDFW to see if a local person lost one and if hasn't been reported... then it'll be interesting table fare!

IF it is a fallow deer that escaped, it could be a very valuable animal.  But if it's not tame I have no idea how they could get it back.
I personally would try to get the word out that there is a loose fallow deer (sheriff's department, animal control, etc) first.  To me it would be like shooting an escaped cow...  :dunno:.  I've personally had cows/steers get out from time to time and it's a very scary thing (even when it's just a little down the road from our farm).   If someone shot my cow I would be devastated!

FWIW, they are delicious.  We had Christmas in England about 20 years ago, my English aunt bought 1/2 a fallow buck for me to cook.  Lighter than American deer, between venison and pork in color - very mild, great flavor, tender.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Let them go crazy and breed, then we can have a hunt-able population.

Just got texted a pic of one in the bed of a pickup. The way it was told to me the Game Warden said it was most likely some sort of hybrid. No issue shooting. Not my kill, can't post it.

It was tame enough. The couple that saw it before I rolled up said it stood on the road and watched them watching him.... Still, in the middle of nowhere... Wish I would have pulled the trigger. :bash:
Wish that couple would have sent me the pictures they took.

Did it look like the pic that I posted on the first page of this thread?  My daughter took that pic about 8-10 miles as the crow flies from where the buck was shot. With the terrain, it could have easily gotten in Vail within a few days.  Just curious if there is more than one roaming around these parts. If it was someone's pet, not sure that I would eat it. You have now way of knowing what kind of medicatons it might have running through it.

When I talked to the state big game vet years ago, he told me it was alpacas that brought in the lice that's causing deer hair loss.  Has that changed?

Man I want to see the pic! I saw lots of fallow deer in New Zealand and wanted to hunt one but didn't have the cash.   :chuckle:

Might as well just post "he's dead".  :tung:

Call the game dept. the permits required to own them would be easy to track. I bet they will tell you to SHOOT! I am pretty sure the hair slip and lice issues have been traced to fallow deer.

They have not.
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.
