Bud, would it be fair to say that GWP's liking to fight is from years ago when they were heavily bred to DD's or imports from Deutschland? That's what I've gathers from long time breeders and what my own eyes have shown me.

I'd give a vote for a pudelpointer of course as I have one. If you are interested at all in the pudelpointers, I know dang near every PP kennel in the US and Canada. Cedarwoods by far produces the best. Nearly every breeder out there has lines coming from cedarwoods.

Half the size of a lab, twice the heart.
Ducks, geese, doves, chukar, quail, pheasant, turkeys....you name it...all at a whopping 40 pounds or less.
Water, land, mud....and no tail destroying your house.
Does not shed like most dogs and are easy on sensitive allergenic people. Family dog all the way.

From what I understand.

German wirehaired pointers and Deutsch Drahthaars are the same breed. The only difference is the testing required to be called a DD is stricter.
I have a GWP and he has an amazing prey drive. Annoying at times unless you are hunting with him. A lot of DD in his pedigree.
Lead em if they're running.

I absolutely vote for labs. I LOVE MINE, She has tons of energy but when my baby nephew is around she gets calm and super careful around him. amazing to see how gently she is

Years ago had a DD and great prey drive but he went after everything including chickens and cats despite my efforts to socialize

another less common breed is the wired hair pointing griffon. Great prey drive, very friendly with people and other pets livestock, smart and versatile breed ( upland waterfowl) indoor family dog but without the great need to go after everything

as said most important is the breeding and genetics

I've seen both DD and Gwp. Wirehairs from the right breeding will do any cold weather hunting you can throw at them. I know most DD people will argue this but the difference between a gwp and a DD aren't much. It's the breeding itself that means most. Kelly jobes at bone point puts out some of the best wirehairs out there right now. I can promise you won't have any cold weather problems with one of his dogs.

Arguably the biggest difference is in sharpness. DD's are far more interested in killing furry critters than GWP's...though that's relative.

I can vouch for this. Good retrievers too, handled the cold Dakota winter just fine!

I used Chuck Johnson's book exclusively.  I did look up some additional stuff online when I was going through the force fetch training.  I found out that it is really easy to over pressure a dog, and mine was shutting down on me.  Gave it a break, tried a softer method and had great results.
