I vote 22/45. My most accurate and fun to shoot gun.

Single six. Most versatile.22 on the market. Plenty accurate, I use the lr cylinder for small game a plinking, I use the magnum with shot shells for snakes. Honestly if I could only have one handgun I don't know that I could not pick it.
this would
Be my vote as well. I've had mine for 35 years now. Have killed
Many rabbits and rattlesnakes with it. But only one
Grouse. I've only pulled the trigger on that one.

There are lots of threads on this same question.
$600 will buy you a lot of nice 22s.
I own 2 Rugers and 1 Buckmark.
One of the Rugers has Volquartsen guts and I still MUCH prefer the Buckmark.
Better feel, grip angle, balance and controls.
I shoot 1911s and the Buckmark is much more natural for me.
I will sell you a nice, like-new Ruger MKII 6" with VQ upgrades, original box if you're interested.

Was having a little fun today.  The CCI 22 Quiet ammo is freakishly more quiet than the Remington Target ammo and that stuff is very quiet.  Funny how screwing a muffler on the end of a ordinary 22 can make you giggle like a little girl.  :chuckle:

Look for a GSG 1911-22.  If you do not find locally put your hands on a SIG 1911-22 to see how they feel and if you like it then order on in with your LGS.  GSG makes the gun, SIG just puts their brand markup on it....  Same exact gun, GSG version should be $300ish after FFL fee which leaves lots of $ for ammo.

My vote is for the 22/45 or the Ruger single six. I have both and they will each shoot as good or better than my 10/22 rifle.
