Word in Columbia County is that the cape for this bull elk is now in possession of WDFW Enforcement.....

Don't know about the cape, but the antlers definitely are.

Hopefully the OP will wade in.  He appears to have changed the story a time or two from his original opening  post.

How about clearing it all up for the crowd, buglin4bulls?
My guess is if the antlers have been taken it is in his best interest to let the process work itself out without providing any more information about what happened.

If there was wrong doing the hunter will want to not be hamstrung by any more statements by the son in law.  I think it is obvious that the OP doesn't have all the facts as his story has changed a little.  I am sure he was just excited about his father in laws bull and wanted to share the photos and story not realizing there was possibly an issue.

I guess I actually hope that is the case.

Unfortunately I think this is another one that will have to play out in the courts.

I think that @Landowner is correct, aside from this incident there is some good discussion that can come from this about private property rights and how to hunt legally.

Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Is there a link to any REAL, OFFICIAL information on this bull elk harvest? I'm obviously new to this forum and would like to here an account of the actual story on this elk kill. I'm not really into trying to decipher all the sarcastic angles posted on this subject. Thank you.

(I know it doesn't sound like much fun to be educated on the facts, but I find it interesting to know the facts).

I don't think people should necessarily crucify someone before all the facts are out BUT too many guys do things that are flat out wrong or illegal and then brag about the animals they killed.  I think the risk of being publicly humilated (even on a forum) brings some value......   :twocents:

Good example of a "wrong doer" was RT.  But, he stood his ground.  When the guy in question gets real quiet is kinda telling......

But, of course all speculation at this point....
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

All we have right now is in this thread started by the hunters son in law and then the comments afterwards by others questioning the location of the kill site.

We do have the properties of the trophy photos shared.  Based on GoHunt! mapping and surface land status mapping, the GPS coordinates recorded by the iPhone 6s at 9:21am on 10/25/2016 are north of National Forest land by about 0.32 miles, and is private land within the West Patit Hunt by Reservation Private Lands Hunting Access Area.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I am a "benefit of the doubt" kind of guy.  I could see where they got crossed up and ended up in the wrong spot.  Depends on how they got there.  If it was clearly posted not a lot of wiggle room.  I think I would have had the HuntX map and made sure I was where I thought I was.

I'm not indicting them.  They could have had the hunting reserved for those dates, they could have received landowner permission.  The iPhone may not have recorded the correct coordinates.  Just adding to the available facts.

it seems to me this thread got jacked. Shouldn't there be another topic on weather it was seized or not? Doesn't seem fair to the poster especially if there was no wrong doing. Mods?

The antlers were in the back of a WDFW enforcement truck yesterday in Dayton.

I'm not up on this tech stuff, but if I understand this correctly, the coordinates can be pulled directly from a photo posted on this thread? How do you find the coordinates from looking at a picture? Very interesting, if they knowingly were hunting on land not open to them, wouldn't they take pictures with an old school camera? Putting all this together it seems, if they were on land not open to them, the could have gotten spun around not realizing they entered a closed area.

I don't see this as thread jacking, jack! If it was seized then it is part of the story so then there is nothing wrong with it being posted in this thread
