The Bears are still out!
« on: October 28, 2016, 09:12:04 AM »
To some this thread will be useless with no pictures...To others use it as Information purpose only...lol The old man and I were up in Greenwater last night hunting deer right at 3700 Ft. Hunting an area I was hoping to find a Bear in over the Summer. As I was telling pops this spot would be good for bears next August I took my binos down to see a Bear standing on a stump 30 yards below the truck looking at me. I was in shock to see a bear on Oct 27th in a clear cut, let alone just standing there...  I never bought my 2nd Bear tag, Dad still has his 1st tag. 1 quick shot from his .25-06 put the bear flipping to the bottom of the clear cut. Great. Grab the pack boards, go down & hurry before dark. When I got in the clear cut I noticed it was still loaded w/ Huckleberries! That bear was still gorging himself on Berries in Late Oct. I thought that was very cool.
It ended up being a small 5' 175lb Bear, not enough light or time for a pretty picture. Gut it, Cut in half, tie up to the pack-frames and start hiking back up to the Truck. I guess I could take a picture of the head for the picture credit.... The moral of this story is, dont give up on the bear hunting until it closes! Get out there on West facing slopes and you might still find berries w/ a bear in it.

Nice! I was out deer hunting yesterday (no luck btw) and notice a pile of bear scat that had only just been rained on. Heck, I was still finding (and eating) patches of black berries. Glad to hear your pops connected! Awesome.

A coworker saw a sow and 2 cubs in Swakane on Monday.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

That's awesome. When I shot my Bear on Aug. opener I was already noticing the Huckleberries to be drying up. I was surprised to still see them, I thought the only thing left was high mtn blue berries.

Had a big boy at 40-50yards just two days ago.  He didnt seem too concerned about my presence, just saw me and departed rather casually

saw some trail cam photos of a big, belly dragging bear the other day.  It is still out, has been hitting up a few walnut and apple trees after a stiff wind.

Way early for west side bear to be sleeping this soon. I work nights/sunrise shift delivering Milk out in Sammamish. For the last 7 years I see bears out knocking down garbage cans till early November. Seen a few in December years back when it was pretty warm. Just wish there was some where to hunt on the Plateau. There's a big boy out by Sahlee.
Thanks for the info non the less.

Bears will come out of their dens all winter long periodically for a consant, reliable high calorie food source.

Tips for hunting one of these rascals in the mountains this time of year? Glass big open spaces? Bunker down in brushy spots? Going out Monday for my last day of big game hunting. I have a deer in the freezer and would love to notch another tag.

I was hunting Sunday and I spooked something up a ways. There was a big patch of black berries there with ripe berries still. I was surprised to still see some around. I'm going to check that area out this weekend to see if there is a bear around.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

Anyone have tips for finding them this time of year?  The areas I have been in lower elevation still have a few berries but sign has gone extinct.  Haven't seen any scat for about 3 weeks now, haven't seen a bear in just about as long.  Idk if MF deer and tons of people flooding the area pushed them out.  Was thinking about heading up high to ~5000 this weekend, but Im not sure if that will be productive.  Just trying to change things up.  Been a pretty rough year with hunting 5-6 days a week since the start of August with nothing on the ground ... any help would be appreciated.

This occurred on Oct 18 in the Toutle Unit.  Temperatures still in the 60's.  Still finding fresh bear sign up to the end of Oct:

Happiness is a warm gut pile. Dragging my son's buck down through the downfalls is the second best cardio conditioning there can be. Best cardio conditioning? While he went to get the truck, a large boar black bear (a "Bubba" even by Quinault standards) popped out of the brush 50' away on the deer drag back trail. There I stood 20' feet away from my unloaded rifle leaning up against a tree next to the deer. I yelled at him with no effect. When he took another step towards me, I went for my rifle. He then turned and walked parallel to me while disappearing into the dense hemlock. I kept one eye on the brush while jamming shells into my rifle, it was then the bear "Woofed" up out of the hemlocks on his hind legs directly across the road from me. With the metallic sound of the lever action slamming a shell into the magazine the bear whirled and was gone before the front bead could settle on him. Leaving me kind of cold and sweaty and thanking I'd taken my blood pressure medicine that morning. Geeee......

Geez! Talk about a rush! I bet you won't leave your gun that far away again......I wonder if the food sources for him are started to disappear, so the dead deer smell brought him in. Hmmm. Interesting either way!

Not sure what the elevation differences will produce, most of the bears i see are between 3 & 4500 ft, that doesn't mean anything though! I always resort to my same motto " South/West facing slopes, sit & glass till your butt goes numb, then sit for 2 more hours after that"....

Ya I've taken some "heat" for the distant unloaded gun.  The other part of the story is I unloaded the gun when we dragged the deer down the steep slope (safety first).  I propped the gun against the tree next to the deer and stepped away to take a pee.  I'd just zipped up and turned around when the bear showed up.  Yikes!

This time of year the berries are mostly gone though we still found some in the bear scat we later saw.  We found fresh bark peeled from stumps and downed wood in nearby clear cuts when bears were feeding on insects.  Mushrooms are also very important for deer, elk, and bear this time of year.  As warm as it's been there is still good grazing for the bears.  Your best bet is edge between dark mature timber and a green clear cut that has not been sprayed.
