No shots fired? I seen tracks everywhere and they howled every night outside camp

got this guy thursday night! rut activity picked up a bit in the south east with the cooler temps.  didn't rattle him in.  He was caught chasing a doe through some crp. I had a goal of 140".  put a tape on him and came up with 141". couldn't be happier!!

A GREAT buck! Just remember it will shrink a little bit during the 60 day drying period.

Yesterday being the last day of modern, fog set in hard so i rattled.  I thought id take any buck just to get meat in my freezer, but a dink little 3x3 wt came in to my rattling, to 20-30 yards, and i just couldnt shoot him.  Felt sorry for his dumb azz.  Ended up shooting a hog at the buzzer, started following the blood trail right before dark, jumped him out of bed so i pulled out.  Went back this morning and all the snow is gone and i cant find him.  Hating life right now.  Shoulda shot the dink.  Or stayed home and shot the 4x5 that i got video of working a scrape in my back yard during daylight yesterdsy morning.  Guess ill be spending a few days up high watching for scavenger birds.   :bash:

I rattled in a spike on Friday morning, passed on him, then ended up shooting a decent 2 point about an hour and a half after that.

I was reading somewhere that the second rut is happening soon. I seen 2 does and a decent 2x2 laying in a field. so maybe the rut hasn't started yet out here in the eastern part yet? at least not for all of them???

I posted my Idaho whitetail buck story  in a separate thread. But to make a long story short, I used some of 3nails advice on aggressive rattling, and it really worked!  Had the biggest buck of my life come in to eight yards.  I had hauled in a portable tree stand, and climbed about 20 feet above the ground.  He never saw me, and the wind was in my favor.

I got in there around 2:15 pm, and was set up with rifle ready by 2:30 pm (end of shooting light was 4:30 pm).  I grunted here and there, but rattled about every half hour.  The last rattling set, though, I really went at it for about two minutes.  Lots of hard hits (swinging the antlers at each other) interspersed with "grinding and mashing" (antlers in contact with each other).  I also reached up high above me from the stand to scrape branches and the trunk of the tree occasionally.

Good luck to all of you with late season Washington or Idaho whitetail tags!

I didn't rattle one in this year. But I only tried one spot for about an hour. It has produced before but I think the unusually mild weather kept more of the deer up higher.
