What a blast!
« on: April 07, 2007, 07:30:12 PM »
:)  Took my 14 year old son, Cody, out this morning.  Got out there about 20 minutes later than I wanted,  Made it in about a mile and was walking down a small ridge when a hen let loose.  We froze and then a gobbler came strutting into view about 125 yards away.  We moved back a little and set up.  The gobble would not respond, but every time the hen would sound off I would mimmick her and it wasn't too long before I could see her moving our way at about 60 yards.  The was a small finger running sideways between us and the birds.  Pretty soon we could both hear the gobbler spittin and drummin and could see his tail feathers walking north and we were facing west.  I got to see him completely at about 30 yards but Cody could not see him enough to get a shot.  They wene't on by and we called the hen back a few minutes later, then a second gobbler opened up south of us and the gobbler to the north started dueling gobbles.  It was awesome even though we did not get to drop the hammer.  My boy had a blast which is what counts.  Birds were pretty much henned up tight and doing alot of displaying and spittin, but very little gobbling, at least where we were at.

Sounds like a great time!
My son (also named Cody) shot his first animal, a turkey at 14.

I do think Turkey hunting is a great start for kids.  Lots of excitement and can be very productive.

Alright who shot a tom?
I am not going  turkey hunting this year because of other commitments, but I still would love to see pictures and read stories.
