Secret stashes!?
« on: November 05, 2016, 08:01:30 PM »
So I was in the goat rocks in early July this year and came across someone's secret stash of camping supplies ( about 6.5 miles in). One of his 10 or so 5gallon buckets had rolled out from under a thick group of trees. I put it back and didn't disturb any of the the contents but I'm sure there are some legality issues with this being wilderness? What are your thoughts?!

Illegal, but I personally wouldn't turn someone in, that could save someone's life. No personal items left unattended in the wilderness for longer than 48 hours.

Yeah I felt the same way it doesn't bother me but hopefully he doesn't walk in there during hunting season and all his stuff is confiscated

That was nice of you.  Should have left him a note, he probably would have shared some of his adventures up there.

this is the way wilderness was explained to us at a us forest meeting. think of going into the wilderness. that is what it should be like.
they aren't replacing any signs because they don't exist in the wilderness.

This a love hate topic for me. I've found a ton of stashed crap in the backcountry. I guess I'm ok with you stashing a lil something, but it never gets pulled back out when done, or you forget, or you just don't end up going back to that area. Well, then animals get into it and it's strung all over and makes a beautiful place look like a damn dump!

So at the end of the day, I guess I hate it!

If they are done correctly and getting used then I don't mind....unfortunately you only find the crap ones that bears get into

Always keep in mind someone could be relying on a stash for much needed support...esp if there's whiskey involved

I've stashed stuff.  Have found it again in one piece and hundreds of pieces.   I don't make a habit of it.

Some people I know will sometimes hike a bunch of jugs of water up to their camping site ahead of the hunting season so that they don't need to make runs down to water during the season. That seems okay to me. Leaving food seems like a bad idea though because something is going to get to it eventually.

What about packing in large water proof boxes to store entire camps in buried to the lid with a light  cover of directors and sticks ....... and they just bring in supplies as needed through out the year I'm sure we have all thought about it at one point

Pack it in and out every time, you'll get in better shape and other people won't have to look at it.

I'm biased against them because of the high rate of abandonment and turning a nice spot into a dump.  If you can do it without my knowing it I have no problem I guess.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

It's fine by me right up until something happens and you don't go back and get it.  The problem is life happens and stuff always gets left behind.  Because of that I say, pack it in and out each time.

It wouldn't bother me if it was something heavy an inert... best thing I could think of is a homemade wood fired tent/camp stove made of metal. Not plastic garbage, food or other stuff that can get spread all over creation making a mess.

I don't have an issue with it if it's during the same year you plan to use it. For example packing some supplies in while scouting during the summer or before your hunt. But I think it all needs to come out when your done or it becomes littering/dumping.

Knew of a guy who horse-packed supplies into the goat rocks early including a case of beer.  Came back to find a bear had punctured and slurped up every can.    :tung:
