Barrel muzzle tape?
« on: November 09, 2016, 08:20:00 AM »
How many of you tape over the muzzle of your barrel when hunting rainy conditions? Do you take it off for the shot or just shoot through it? I've always wondered that

 :yeah:

The pressure built up ahead of the bullet pops the tape off before the bullet gets to the tape.  No appreciable effect on accuracy.

I do e-tape as well, but more for junk than rain. I cannot imagine that a little rain in the barrel has any effect on bullet performance?

Tape over the brake. I just put it to the test at 420 yards and no problems at all.

Just buy a bag of cheap children's small party balloons. Roll them on like a rain coat, absolutely no effect on performance. A little cheaper then finger cots if you are worried about saving a couple $. I went that way because the balloons can be picked up almost anywhere, any time.

I'm with Jay.  I could never figure out why people did this unless they are trying to protect the bore from water.  Water getting down the bore, what little will during a rainstorm, will have no effect on accuracy.

I did it on muzzleloaders, Western WA is not a place to take any chances on getting your powder wet. Moisture can make it's way down the rifling. Also one slip in the wrong place and you can get more than just water down the drain pipe.

They break way to easy in the brush.  Hunting partner gave me one in CO this year.  Lasted maybe two days then I went back to my electrical tape.

That's what I'd worry about in brush. They definately are not as tough as electrical or duct.

Electrical tape. Put a bunch of extra raps around the barrel for after the shot. Then you have extra ready to retape the hole.

Wouldn't gorrila tape be so strong it would rip the end off the barrel before it would let loose  with a bullet passing. ?? :)

Why would I take the time to order or go buy these, when I have rolls of electrical tape in every drawer of my house, every backpack, and every vehicle I own?
I tape my barrel for water and anything else that might get down the bore.

I spent 30 seconds to order them cause electrical tape falls off all the time.  I find these much easier.  Worth "spending the time" to order, cause for me thry work a lot better.

I use E-tape.

Reading this entire thread laughing. I have used the finger cot things as gag gifts (likening them to small condoms) for several bachelor partys. Reading here about them....breaking, falling off, worries about things getting down your bore, rolling without protection,  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I always tape the barrel if there's inclement weather or if you carry in pack scabbards. I got a nice elk thanks to my brother not covering his barrel. We were together and decided he would shoot first, just before he shot noticed his barrel was obstructed. It ended up being very minor and would have been safe, but that's not a risk anyone should take. However, in the meantime I figured the only brotherly thing to do was shoot the elk. :chuckle:

E tape over the the muzzle and then more wrapped around the barrel to make sure it stays put. No matter the weather or circumstances it's always there, problems solved.

I use a foam ear plug that, if the situation permits, I take out and put in my left ear before the shot.

+1 for electrical tape. If you slip and your muzzle goes into the mud, you're done for the day, or at least until you clean it.

No, you're not.

Have one of those too, much easier to pack than a cleaning rod.

Electrical tape, bore snake and a couple drops of oil will fix everything that can be fixed in the field.
