Wyoming deer unit 17 or 24 help needed
« on: November 13, 2016, 06:29:00 PM »
Have a buddy hunting whitetail does in those 2 Units 17&24.  His land access fell thru at the last second, as in he showed up and they pull the rug out. Anyone with any suggestions. Most of the unit is private, he called me as a Hail Mary... I know it is a long shot but it can't hurt to ask.

No luck yet... Personally I think he is crazy to go that far for a whitetail Doe but to each his own.  :dunno:

I'd start with a call to the Sheridan regional office, 307-672-7418.  They may have someone or will put him in touch with the district game warden.  Also worth a visit to the Gillette Visitors Center 1810S Douglas Highway Suite A, or by calling (307) 686-0040 - however a visit is more likely to produce than a phone call.  If all else fails, drive the creek bottom roads in those hunt areas and look for irrigated hay fields and/or stored hay crops, knock on the door and ask permission.  It is helpful to let them know you did have prior permission with XXX, but that they changed their mind.

I don't know if there was a severe die-off due to EHD/bluetongue this summer, but if so it will be really hard to get access in areas that were hit hard.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Thanks so much. Great places to start. Sent him the info. Heard from them tonight, They are seeing lots of big bucks.  Unfortunately 2 of them they saw had just the horns sawed off. Spent some time with LEO and gammies. His Dad is in his 80's and they are having a great time even with the access issue.

Have them look on the net at Wyoming's "Access Yes" program. Sheridan county walk in areas 7 through 10 look to be in deer unit 24.

This map shows deer unit 17 with an approximate hand drawn boundary. The yellow (BLM) and blue (state) areas are public.

Not all of them area publicly accessible, but many are.

Good luck.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.
