Tapped holes in Knight Bighorn Reciever
« on: November 14, 2016, 08:30:16 PM »
There are five drilled & tapped holes on the top of my stainless Bighorn. There are two right above the nipple and then a series of three holes to the rear of the nipple adjacent to the safety. A gunsmith plugged those three with stainless screws. For the two holes above the nipple he just plugged the very front one closet to the rear sight.

Here's my question...can I plug that one hole that's unplugged? The gunsmith thought that was some type of gas vent? I'm thinking that's not accurate. If I could legally mount a scope on the gun, the front part of the base would screw there anyway. With that one hole left unplugged, isn't that a place for water to enter and get the powder wet?

Can't we all just get along?

The 5 holes on top of the receiver are for scope mount or for a rear peep site.  If you are not using them they all should be filled with a filler screw.

The front two holes for the scope mount - I think the rear of the two does go all the way through but it is over the top of the nipple.  I would certainly put a plug screw in it - actually I would put a screw in all of them if I were not using them.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Four of the five are plugged. Soon all five will be. Thanks for the info Sabotloader. As a side note: unplugged above the nipple would allow rain to drip and get my powder wet. Yes?

It possibly could make it to the powder charge  - but a larger possibility is it really could drop through and get into you cap!
