Horse Shot more than likely by Hunter

I know it's a long shot but if anyone hears of a Hunter with a late Palouse tag hunting in Northwest Spokane county (Deep Creek) area that is talking about the big one they missed, they shot a horse! 
The owner of the horse is an 18 year old neighbor and relative. She is devasted by this. Rodeo horses are not cheap!
One of the most important rules of firing a weapon, Know what lies beyond your target!
This is the very reason why property owners do not allow hunting on there property. I can tell you this story has been spread wide among farmers and ranchers in this area and if you have thought about putting in for the Palouse hunt, don't bother! I can guranteee some ground around here will be getting shut down!

That's horrible that a horse  got shot, it may be by a hunter but probably not. Most likely by an idiot with a gun. Seems like there's more of those than hunters out there Either way it's catostrophic to the owner. Palouse is a big unit; don't think others should "don't bother"

Well the owner has lots of family with land in the Palouse hunting GMU's. Trust me!
And like I said, more than likely a hunter. If one of the neighbors was shooting, we would know.

    That is a terrible loss for the owner and sad for the horse. I found a horse dead up in 124 IEP land last November about 300 yards from public land. This one was no accident though as the shot was right behind the shoulder. I am still not sure if it was lead out their and taken out by the land owner. It was a very old looking horse and may have been put down due to suffering.
    Hopefully the owner of the horse doesn't have ill feelings toward all hunters for the unfortunate incident. I don't hunt the Palouse, but do have friends who archery hunt out their every year. Better a horse than a human being. This is the kind of thing my fiancé worries about everytime I go hunting or take my young son Elijah. Be safe everyone, and sure of your backstop.

It happens at least once a year in WA. And yes I am talking about a "hunter" (or should I say someone pursuing wildlife while possessing a hunting license?) shooting a horse. I have been at several incidents where the individual thought the horse was an elk. Apparently they didn't see big long tail and mane....

Was told by a WI warden about a couple if Illinois "hunters" that brought their two spikes into a check station, not sure if they got to eat the two goats or not.... Kind of funny, but not for the owner of the "spikes".

My sister once dated a guy that hunted Montana quite a bit. He lost his hunting privileges for I believe it was 4 years when he mistakenly shot a horse thinking it was a cow. I want to say he was even hunting a brow tine area. Boy did my dad love to give her a bad time about her ex boyfriend. He later had a massive heart attack and died while hunting off horses out of Dillon.

It was quite common for Jersey cows to be shot in VT back in the 70s and 80s. Many farmers either painted or tied hunter orange to their animals. I saw a picture of one which had "cow" painted on both sides. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to hunt.

My grandpa had several head of cattle that he winter ranged up in Idaho back in the 80s.  Every year, he took orange spray paint and sprayed "COW" on the side of his cattle.  Sure enough, one year, the game warden called from a check point and said one of his cows was in the bed of a truck and the hunter was pleading his case.  Luckily he was able to salvage the meat.  As a 10 year old boy at the time, I remember eating well that winter.

I saw that here in Washington about thirty years ago.  It was up in Cherry Valley.

If I was the investigator, I'd be asking the young lady about any guys she might have rejected.  And, especially if that rejection used rodeo as a reason.  Young men who feel rejected too often turn attraction into payback, unfortunately.  More likely it was shot deliberately than mistaken for a 3-poin t minimum whitetail buck IMHO.
