Az unit 22 South
« on: November 18, 2016, 03:27:46 PM »
I'm going to be heading to AZ the day before Thanksgiving to help a buddy on his late rifle elk hunt in 22 south. Looks like some rougher country compared to typical Az elk country. Anyone been in there? I saw a great Youtube video with Randy Newberg on a late rifle hunt in there. Lots of elk but not as good as 22N. Looking forward to getting out of town for the holiday.

Its beautiful country. Pack a camera and be prepared for snow. Northern Arizona is COLD right now. I  may or may not be out in the nearby country at the time. Wont confirm or deny that publicly.  :)

Sorry for the late response as your already probably there in AZ.  I moved from AZ to Spokane 2 years ago and I know unit 22 S pretty well.  Me and a friend of mine killed good bulls in there a few years ago.  If you read this....hunt that low country west of the highway 87 of Rye.  Most of the bigger bulls will be coming out of that country....You can PM me and I'll pass on my telephone # if you want to talk.  Ed

Thanks for the info, I just got home last night from the adventure. My friend got his bull, he was so happy to fill his tag with a spike, his first bull. He ended up shooting it on the 3rd day of his hunt at last light. We were camped out past the Jim Jones shooting range and almost got 'mudded in'. When you get rain the roads turn to muck. It took us 16 hours to get camp broke and hauled 3 miles. It took 11 trips with his quad.
It was beautiful and I got to hike around quite a bit. I found a 4pt bull shed and a really old Horseshoe.
