Question for you kuiu guys
« on: November 19, 2016, 08:45:24 PM »
I am wanting too get new camo next year. I am wanting to get some kuiu stuff. I've been into the stores and looked at Sitka stuff and like it, however I would really like to get kuiu camo. I like the pattern better and it's not as expensive as Sitka.mhowever the main hang up I have I cant put it in my hands before I buy them. So I guess I'm asking how hard was it for you to pull the trigger on buying kuiu? Do you have and regrets? Or should I just bite the bullet and get kuiu without hands on?

It's honestly too vague of a question. They both have top of line stuff and stuff that is nowhere near worth the money for the individual item.

If you're really determined to have a matching set then go with whatever but I think anybody who's being honest knows that mixing and matching not only saves money but helps you end up with the best clothing items too.

One thing to know about KUIU is they have taken the "athletic fit" to an extreme.

If you're not into skin tight on your base layers and secondary layers, then size up.

I guess I was asking how you guys got the guts to pull the trigger on something that spendy without putting hands on, you know? I really like to put hands on everything before I purchase. I am determined to have a matching set but realize that mix and match is a good way to go.
I am a bigger guy to begin with 6 2 270. However I do like a athletic fit for a base layer while hunting. So how much of a athletic fit does kuiu have? Don't want the boys to be strangled

For the pants, you are probably okay to order their recommended sizes. I think the skin tight comment is mainly applicable to the base layers and a few of their lightweight tops.

Guys who have the KUIU soft shell pants are generally pretty pleased with their comfort level.

The Chugach raingear I would get. Otherwise firstlite baselayers, at 270 # I would look at Sitka for mid / outer layers.

If you want a decent setup that can go all season, here is my recommendation:
Alpine or attack pants, 145 base layer top/ bottom, Peloton 200 pullover or 210 merino pullover, Kenai jacket, Chugach jacket and pants, and a set of gaiters.
Been super happy and plenty comfortable. If you want super waterproof for all day wear get the Yukon rain gear, but I like to pack my rain gear so I chose the Chugach for all season use.

Read your post, the pants have a longer inseam. I'm 6' 250 and fit in XL, I would go 2xl at your size. Try on the sitka, size difference was not that different for me.

I don't own any kuiu and cant speak for their product other than reputation and reports from others. But here is my  :twocents: anyway :chuckle:. A couple of my  hunting partners have gone "full buy in" on kuiu and they have been very satisfied. They are "athletic" and report quality fit to size. I also know several guys that are not the "athletic" build and they report little problem with getting sizes, just a couple returns on some items to dial it in. In the end I think the quality of the gear is good, so go for it, try it on and return if you dont like the fit. Not alot of risk. More hassle than anything.

I've heard good things about first lite as a base layer and have been meaning to check those out. Hopefully I'll be able to soon.

Northwest hunter, your recommendation was pretty much exactly what I had my eye on, the only difference was I had the chinook on my list.

I've tried on plenty of sitka and I don't like the fit.

I got some kuiu stuff this year and LOVE it. Hardly know you are wearing it. Warm as hell. Light.

I snagged my puffy jacket on plenty of branches and it never ripped so I have no problem with its durability.

I think they have a very easy return policy as long as it is not an "outlet" item.

If they dont take something back, someone on here will always buy it. If its still unused, just mark it down a little bit from retail and its a win-win.

I like their business model and their gear is top notch.

I've bought a few items and always buy just a few things here and there.. I like everything that I've purchased so far. I do like my Sitka Ascent pants better than my Kuiu Pelotons and Alpine pants though.

I was getting ready to buy some KUIU gear and got a chance to check out first light base layers. They are a game changer, 100% wool. I wear an aero wool and a chama for tops. Wore them for 7 days on an elk hunt, never showered and they didn't stink. Also using their puffy jackets and Corregulate pants.

Exactly what he said. I went crazy on buying a ton of Kuiu over the past couple years. And I love every piece. Yet for the most part, thru all seasons, i utilize the alpine Or attacks, a merino base layer, peloton 240, and chugach raingalear. I added the gaiters this year and love those too. But really with just this setup alone will get you they most seasons around here.

The bino harness is amazing too btw.

Good luck with your purchases!

Buying without touching it first is always tough.  I ended up just going for it and taking the chance. I have their Yukon jacket and am very satisfied.  I did talk to them before buying though and they reassured me that I can return/exchange anything I need if the sizes weren't right or if I didn't like something. Other than being a bit inconvenient, it's an easy and smooth process.  I had to do a warranty exchange on the jacket and there were no issues or problems.  Told me where to send it and I had a new jacket quickly.

Like others have said, I would check out the first lite gear for base and mid layers.  Awesome stuff and easy to deal with on exchanges and returns as well.
