No Ground Shrinkage here :)
« on: November 21, 2016, 01:25:56 PM »
Guess I can truly say that as I thought it was a forky when I pulled the trigger.  :chuckle:
Last day of season 2 hrs of shooting time left. Been awhile since I've shot a deer so decided if it had horns it was gonna happen this year. Glassed him quickly with the binos as he came in about 80 yrs out and below me. Noted he was a buck, likely a 2 pt and I was almost hesitant (you know that part of you that always wants a bigger one). Pulled up the rifle and wouldn't you know it the scope was fogged up. Could see cross hairs and body, but not good enough to evaluate the headgear.
Boom........ one shot from the 7x57. Kinda thought i'd missed the way he ran off, but he was piled up within 50 yrds.
Did my first gutless processing. Packed quarters and all the trimmings in 2 game bags and Jerry rigged my badlands superday pack to accomodate. Lets just say it was not a fun trip back to the truck about 1/2 mile and a couple of ridges away.
May have to invest in a better pack system or frame.
I could have done 2 trips, but just wanted to get it over with. On hind site I'd have done 2 trips.

Nice job, I like my superday but it is not a good meat packer. I can fit about half a deer in there.. how did you get it all in one trip? Lol

This.  I have this pack and use it for day scouting trips.  A whole deer seems impossible.

Way to go, Mike. Can't wait to see what sort of concoctions you come up with the venison.

Well........ For starters it wasn't a masher, just a nice sized young buck. I unzipped it all the way, unfastened all the straps and just started crisscrossing until It held things steady. Don't know what it weighed but things held fast. Just wasn't real comfy. Oh and add to that i'm seriously out of shape. Like I said, do over and it would be 2 trips.  ;)

A couple of HuntWa members were participating in this hunt if only symbolically. The rifle is one I traded Jackelope for a few years ago, Ruger M77 MKII 7x57 (Nice little shooter).  And the Havalon knife I used to break him down I picked up from Carpsniper a few months ago. Thanks Guys!!!!
Don't think I'll go back to a traditional knife for that kind of work. I dis-articulated the hock and the carpus with it as well. Only broke one blade trying to get his noggin off at the vertebrae. Otherwise one blade would have been plenty.
Oh and thanks to Whacker1 for motivating me to keep after it
