They're in the neighborhood for sure. Its only a hop and a skip from the Teannaway, where they are definitely established. I heard them howling up Nasty Creek 3 years ago.

Was watching a show on wolves and it was amazing how many miles they put on in 24 hours! When I saw that one I ran up to where it was and found the tracks in fresh dirt....unless someone had their great dane out for a walk...

For just a minute I thought maybe it was my Dad, we did have elk camp chili for dinner the night before.

So today I had lunch with the cowboy who along with is wife a few others rides the rimrock area for cows. He and his wife live in their trailer from may to October, at least one member of there four man team is in the saddle and riding everyday and most day it's two of them, he has done this for many years. I asked him about wolves and he said none of them have every seen or heard a wolf, not even a track.

I think those cowboys are correct that there are probably few or none at all. I have been hiking, jeeping, fishing and hunting in that unit for most of my life and have never even seen a track, let alone heard one howling. I personally think the issue is way overblown. Most people's sightings aren't ever verified or even witnessed by someone who knows what to look for.

I'm sure they have at least passed through and if they found red meat, have stayed awhile.  They are south, and north of there.

 While up on the Colockum during elk rifle season this year, I met a licensed predator controller. He is licensed for Montana, Idaho, and Washington. He said in his opinion there are many wolves in Washington, and that their numbers are beyond managing already. He told me that the game department has no idea what their numbers are.---- Just telling you guys what I was told... thought I'd throw it out there....

Even if they opened a season as liberal as coyotes, no way to control them.   Poison would be the only way.

Boneaddict, YOU are spot on as well. The predator controller also said the same thing. He is finding that the wolves are wising up quickly. For an example, he said that he can call them in all day long, but they will not show themselves. He said they stay in thick cover and ascertain the situation before ever committing. -Smart pack predators that will continue to increase in numbers, unfortunately....

I also heard a howl in nasty creek. A single howl about 10 minutes before dawn, 3 years ago.

Adding to the Nasty Creek claims. It's been about 4 years maybe a bit more now. A friend and former co worker (Josh) was helping a hunting buddy at his cabin up Nasty Creek and told our mutual friend he heard a lone wolf howling for several minutes 2 night before. I've never questioned what my friend has ever told me... never.

Only once have I ever heard a wolf howl and that was 25-30 years ago while camping near the Looking Glass River in OR. Next day I could see the rock outcrop across the river they had been howling from. They howled for a good 5 minutes.

In 1995-96 the USFWS illegally released wolves into the Yellowstone and Idaho, (6-7 years later) in 2002 all three states were eligible to delist.

WDFW claim wolves started "migrating" into WA in 2002, and now 15 years later WDF&wolves still can't seem to find enough wolves for delisting.

I wonder if WDFW's wolves are gay?
