6.5 creedmore ammo question?
« on: December 02, 2016, 03:16:36 PM »
I shoot a Ruger American in 6.5 creedmore and absolutely love the way it shoots Hornady 129 grain sst, my question is how do I duplicate this round by reloading myself? Is the powder recommendations in the reloading book the same as what they use in there factory otc loads, or will I have to start from the beginning through trial and error?

from the beginning, companies never list the loads and many times they are special blended powders that you cannot buy.

This is a tough one.  Factory ammo (as stated above) will never state which powder or charge they are running (Hornady did this on their AMAX loads when they first came out, but stopped).

What I always do, is pull a couple of bullets and weigh the powder charges.  From there I will try and match the powder.  Sometimes you can visibly tell.....rarely, but sometimes.  I always start lower than what I measured, because you really can't tell.

At the end of the day, if you are going to reload, it is much easier to just build a load for your rifle.

Yeah, I would say take measurements on the factory rounds so you know the OAL, shoot factory ammo over chrono so you know FPS.  Then start working up a load to match OAL and FPS...  Ech barrel is going to have a jump to lands and fps that it likes, goal is to try to match that.

:yeah: Also be prepared to play with a few different powders as well.

How about now ? Do you, duplex the powder anymore ? I've seen a mixed powder one time shooting long range and it scared the crap out of the guys.

There is really no need to do it now.  Mostly it was with black powder, put a few grains of smokless in first to get the powder to touch off a bit easier and help, supposedly, to reduce fowling.

In smokless it was mainly because guys didn't have the powder options that we do now.

Mixing powder is a no-no.

Go over to the Savage Shooters forum or 6.5 Creedmoor forum. Some of the first Hornady ammo had the load listed on the boxes. Some of the loads where using H4350.
You might get more detail on the loads over there in the reloading sections.

Those were "recommended loads" for someone who wanted to approximate the factory load. They were not the factory load recipe.

And for the OP - just FYI, you'll have better luck finding good loads if you search for Creedmoor, instead of Creedmore.
