If you could...
« on: December 02, 2016, 06:30:50 PM »
Forfeit a tag (Elk or deer) Would you?? Been looking hard for elk and found good sign but nothing.. In the meantime i have had an 6 deer in range that I could have harvested. Got me thinking, with archers, where it's a bit harder to get an animal, I wonder how many people would want to forfeit their Elk tag for a Deer tag if given the chance. Ive read a lot about where during Elk season hunters see Deer and during Deer season hunters see Elk. Just kind of make sense to me that if you realize your chances for getting an Elk are low, why not be given an opportunity to harvest a second Deer......no smart ass comments. I'm just thinking out loud here. Tired of watching good meat walk away from me. lol

Some of the tribes do something like that (I think I understand what you're saying).  If they aren't going to fill an elk tag, they can exchange it and get six additional deer tags.

Something like Alaska buy a moose tag and can get a caribou with it. Never happen here, it equals money lost in the revenue stream.  :twocents:

That would be really hard on our already struggling deer herds.  :twocents:

When I forfeit the Elk tag I'd be willing to buy the Deer tag. Maybe that would help with the revenue stream. So essentially I'd be buying 3 tags....not using one. And the deer can't be struggling that much if the tribes will trade an Elk tag for 6 deer tags.....I mean I know the rules are different for Indians,  but if the herds were really struggling, you'd think not even they would be able to do that. I could be wrong. I don't know haha. And apparently you can buy a second tag but you'd have to hunt somewhere in the 400's. That wouldn't be worth it for me.

Yeah, so anybody who bowhunts deer can kill 2 bucks if they dont go elk hunting.  Brilliant.  Im sure wdfw would think its a great idea, you should tell them, theyll probably have it on the board for next season.  Hey while youre at it, ask if i can use my cougar tag on a 3rd deer

I'm not asking to kill two bucks....I'm lucky to get one! Look, I said I was just thinking out loud...but let me guess, you're a rifle hunter? LOL Why does this make you so mad? Its never gonna happen, I was just wondering if people would want to do that or not. It's a question. Wasn't meant to be an argument...

Wow everybody is worried about the deer herds, that I can't use my 223 to take a clean kill on my one deer year.seasons, tags, regs, are all set so we don't over harvest,or not harvest at all.besides are you talking about useing this extra deer tag durring elk season when u see these deer walk away.or durring deer season and just have a extra tag.besides I always see what your not hunting durring another season ,happens to everybody it sucks and just part of hunting.Good luck with it .

I'm basing every thing off the rules, you can get one deer and one elk.....as of right now, it's deer and elk for archery, but I've already filled my deer tag...so I guess in this sense, I just would want to get another deer tag but would be willing to turn over my elk tag to do it.

I hunt rifle and archery.  Im not mad, its just a horrible idea.  What youre saying in a nutshell is, "i think i should get 2 bucks because im unsuccessful at elk hunting."

I believe Idaho does something like this where you can put your elk tag on a bear.  Something like that anyway.

Like I said, I'm not even hunting bucks, I'd take a doe. I'm not unsuccessful until Dec 15, the point I"m making is I see a deer every day, every 20 mins and I have to watch em walk away. Everyone does. I guess you're right. But I see these animals as food, which I'm sure many of us do....and when I'm unsuccessful than that's less food for me and my family. Money is tight and being able to hunt and be successful really helps us out. It's less about hunting and more about having the meat, whether that's elk or deer....whatever. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE hunting! Really enjoy it, but being unsuccessful comes with the territory. I understand that. But I also refuse to pay 300 bucks for a Weyehaeuser permit where my chances would probably be a lot better than on the DNR land I hunt....

And like I said, this will never happen....again, just wondering if the option was there if anyone else would do it. That's all. I'm not saying I SHOULD get anything. Just thinking out loud.

In this day and age I believe it's cheaper to buy meat than kill it, and I raise my own beef. Hunting if you really do the math us a hobby.  :twocents:

Im having a bad year here personally, only tag ive filled is bear.  Im still out with my bow trying to find a good buck, but its getting to where every day im having to make the choice between shooting a young dumb buck or eating my tag.  But thats how it goes, some good years some bad years.  I might just eat my deer tag this year.  Kinda hard thing to swallow, but it is what it is.
