Deer scoring
« on: February 12, 2009, 02:36:33 PM »
Some other threads contained photos of bucks with scores that were questionable to some folks.  Not trying to stir the pot here, just thought I'd post some live buck photos for everyone to practice their scoring on.  I've included three shots of the buck so you'll have more to go on than a single, head on photo.

Let's see some numbers.  How wide, gross score, net score?

He's already been shot and scored, I just thought it would be interesting to let everyone score a buck "on the hoof" and then give the correct numbers.  No better way to train your eye IMHO.  I'll post the true scores in a couple days.

ran him through my math "program"  came out with 30. 1875 inches wide, which is essentially 30 and 1/8 or so.....curious how close it works.  Of course it was with a smaller pic but fun anyhow

I'm going to borrow the 29 4/8" spread from Mossback2, 192 gross and 185 4/8" net.  All I really know is "SHOOTER"!  I wouldn't even guess a score until after he was dead and tagged.

I concure I am going to get a little more technical. Main beams 24 g-1 1.5 g-2 17.5 g-3 9.0 g-4 11.5 h-1 5.0 h-2 4.75 h-3 4.5 h-4 4.5 that is his biggest side. double that and give him 26 in spread, generously he may gross 190, he is quite lopsided, he may ONLY  net 180.

I'm gonna throw out the following:

Bow n String' muley- 184 gross
Bow  String's whitetail- 196 gross

Those are all three awesome bucks in three different kind of ways!!!!

Not good at those exact scores (too much math).  Gut feeling says "that's a 200" buck".  'nuff to make me pee a little if he was in front of me and I had a tag...
and yes, nets are for fish (again, waaay too much math)...

Guys, I've got to apologise.  I thought I had the official score of the buck, it turns out its his "rough" score.  I shipped the hunter an email this morning to see if he ever had it officially scored, hopefully we'll know soon.  BUT, his rough score is lower than anyone's guess.   The buck is a hair over 29 on the outside.   His rough gross is 181 and nets 174.  If any of you have a 2008 Oregon tag guide, the buck is on page three.  Still a darn good buck for a muzzy hunter!

Mule deer can be very decieving. I don't know how many time I have gone after a (monster) someone saw only to be dissapointed when I found him. Major ground shrinkage. Fun nontheless. thanks for the thread ricochet. I would still shoot that buck anyday.

Would you rather have a wall full of trophies that were Impressive to look at or a wall full of trophies that get your name in a book. I think some of the most Impressive deer I have seen didn't make the record book. That deer there fits into that category. He looks extremely impressive so who cares what he scores.

Agreed WAPITIHUNTER,
He's a beautiful buck and to the hunter that took him, he's the buck of his lifetime.  Scores are useful for comparing different buck's headgear, but only the hunter knows the true value of the trophy.  Its just human nature to turn everything into a competition (i.e. synchronized swimming) but the true competition is between hunter and prey and there's no way to quantify that.

Great example.  Folks think that 190 or 180 is just a number bouncing around out there.  Too many folks reading muley crazy I think.  Thats why I am so critical when folks throw up their exaggerated scores.  A 190 buck is a holy grail!  180 buck isn't far off.

Personally I set my goal at 180 class min. on every trip. If it gets to the last day I will then drop it to 170 class, knowing a 170 buck is still pretty impressive and is typically lacking in only one spot to make it a 180 buck. :twocents:
