New Duck Call?
« on: November 19, 2016, 01:13:48 PM »
So for those of you out there that run Echo calls, I am looking at getting a single reed.  I run a Meat Hanger and DiamondWood Timber for doubles right now.  I do have a Cabela's SLD-1, but am I am not 100% satisfied with it, as far as range of sounds I can get out of it.  Really the issue is I am at a toss up between a XLT or a Breaker.  Any reviews would be appreciated.  Amplifying info would be that I hunt a mix of big water and occasional small ponds.  Would like to get range but still be able to work ducks in close.  Thank you ahead to time.

Try a Boss second generation. While it a comp call it can be tuned for hunting.

The Boss is my third choice so definitely on my short list, only concern is it might be a little more advanced of a sound profile for switching over from a double. Not sure, they sound great, and top end the sky is the limit with that call. I like the design for back pressure and the attitude on the low end. Might have to work up to it to be able to really work it.

You can find Echo Boss's for sale or trade on Duck call trader, closed group but easy to join and on other FB duck call sites. If you don't like it there's a market for Boss's so you should be able to move it for what you paid for it. Probably around $100. The transition from a double reed to a single reed can be frustrating but learning how to deliver the air and not spit is important to keep a single from sticking. If you want to do a comp routine in the house or in the car get some ear plugs. Record yourself calling and then play it back. You'll hear things in your calling that you never knew you were doing. Practice calling like you will be calling in the duck blind. IMO you can deliver a lot more air standing vs sitting so practice like you're hunting. Let us know what you get!!

After much deliberation and listening to sound bites, I picked up a orange pearl breaker from Mack's. It came in today, sounds awesome and it has all the range I was looking for. Can't wait to run it on some birds here soon.

Sounds good. Hope it's not a sticker.  Most of my Echoes haven't been. Single reeds can be a pain. If one of mine sticks in the house I'll bend the reed ever so slightly away from the tone board. If that doesn't make it better it hits the trade it pile. You know reeds have a spine. Pinch the reed between your thumb and index finger top and bottom.  Pinch down slightly and you should see what side it wants to curve too. The curve should go away from the toneboard.
