.410 question
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:20:41 AM »
this may be a dumb question but i dont know the answer so im going to ask it.

i have a single shot break action .410 and my friends dad told i could shoot .41 caliber bullets through it. i have not tried it for fear that they are not compatible and do not want to mess up the gun or injure myself i was just wondering if it is true what he said.

thanks

.410 and .45 are the same diamater. The Taurus Judge shoots both .45 Long Colt and .410 shotgun. The difference is that the Judge has a rifled barrel. It would not be advisable to shoot .45 LC out of a non-rifled barrel.
Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

Would it be ok if the 410 shotgun wasn't choked at all? Like say you cut three inches off the end of the barrel, thereby eliminating the choke? Or is a shotgun not built to withstand the pressure that a pistol cartridge is loaded to?

They can't take the pressure of the pistol cartridge.

OK, yeah that makes sense. I suppose you could probably handload some .45 cartridges and keep the pressure down to the level of a 410 shotgun shell, and it would probably be ok then.  :dunno:

lets just say the only thing that will be fired out of my .410 are .410 shotshells or slugs made for the gun

Maybe.  You also might be able to download a 50BMG and shoot it in a 28ga but I wouldn't want to. ;)

Seriously though, it was an interesting question.

Not sure what advantage there would be.  Loaded down the 45LC would be wimpy to begin with, and shooting it out of a smoothbore would produce horrible accuracy, kind of like a Tim Wakefield knuckleball.  Can't see any advantage over a .410 slug. :twocents:

Listen to what is being said... If a barrel is rifled and made to shoot the .45LC then you could shoot .410 from it. No way it works the other way. Chamber pressure is too much for .45LC in shotgun barrel and accuracy would suck, even to the point of being dangerous. Big hurt locker in your future if you attempt it.

Oh I wasn't going to try it myself. I was just curious if the choke was the problem or the higher pressure of the 45. I see no reason to shoot a 45 out of a 410 shotgun.

I seem to remember that T/C used to produce a barrel for the Contender that would shoot both.  The fact it was rifled kept it from being a sawed off shotgun.  It could be a glitch in my memory banks, though. :P

Your rememberer is working fine! I always wanted a Contender 45/410, just could not afford one. Tought it would be a great grouse gun!

heres a reason not to do it a .45lc has a bore dia. of .452 a .410 shotgun has a bore dia. of .41 (or so dont know off the top of my head) or smaller if it has a full choke. you could serioulsy hurt your self or someone else doing that. also FYI theres a company called firestorm that makes a .45lc/.410 pistol called the comanche that retails for like 200 bucks its not preety but its fun to shoot
