We have 2, big 2 points in town here. Technically 3 points with an eye guard or the slightest of sticker on one side. Both are surely on regress. Mangy old fellas. Fun to watch "pretend" to spar. The woman and I have a running joke about them and their arthritis.

I wouldn't think twice on that guy.  Big two points are pretty cool.

I would let him grow for a couple years before taking him. Can't shoot wall hangers if you take the little ones. Great picture though .Watched this Black tail grow up for a couple years before I took him and yes a true black tail west of  I-5

That buck is not getting any bigger.  He'll live out his life as a giant 2 point I'd wager.

Just curious why do you think he won't get any bigger? Is there something in the photo that tells you that?

That buck is mature age-wise, he's not your typical 2.5 yr 2 point.  Although I don't hunt the Palouse / breaks of the snake river anymore, that country is loaded with 2pt breeder bucks.  They'll never develop forks, they are and always will be 2 pointers with an occasional eye guard or sticker.  The two pointers became the prodminant buck once the 3 PT or better restrictions were implemented a couple decades back.

What he said. That's a mature buck. He might get a little bigger, but he's not going to magically become a big 4x4. He'll be a big 2 point forever I believe.

That is how it usually works.  By two and a half you can get a sense of what they are going to be, by three and a half they will have the general configuration, but lack length & mass and then as they age they gain mass and length and then when they get old they lose mass and length.   about

Thanks for the replies guys. Does anyone know if the same can be said about whitetails i.e. that a whitetail's 2.5 year old antler frame won't change a whole lot years down the line?

I don't know how often it happens with whitetail but I know it can. We watched a 2x2 with eyeguards for 4 years. He never grew any bigger he added mass and width but never any more points before my little brother shot him

Just because it is a big 2 point does not mean he will only make 2points. Good genetics for antler growth means good genetics period. he will make offspring with the same genetics not just 2 points........

Well... kind of.  Offspring get half of their genes from the doe and half from the buck.  And it matters whether the trait is poly genetic or not and it matters if there are both dominant and recessive genes associated with it.  It's been decades since I studied genetics and it is not child's play to understand even traits that are governed by the most simple of combinations.  You get into more complex traits and it is very difficult for an expert to even explain it in simplistic terms to a layman.

What genetics are behind the buck. What genetics are behind the doe...and even if you do explain it all and have everything right, sometimes it still turns out a 4x buck and sometimes it turns out a lifer 2 point.

There's a forkie who hangs out near me that I would shoot with a quality tag. He's insane. Tallest 2 point I've ever seen without a stitch of an eye guard

THis is probably his father or grandfather.   I was literally standing the last place I saw him when I filmed the topic buck above....  ten years later.   There has been a big two in this bowl or square mile area almost every year since I first started shed hunting and looking for bucks.   Lots of other nice bucks too, but always a big two.
