Seeking Wisdom..............
« on: February 13, 2009, 04:24:13 PM »
How or What is the best way to introduce a puppy in training, to birds?

I am trying to train my pup on my own with no experiance and a trying to find out the most effective or best way to do this. I have read some books on training and bought a few videos, but none of them cover this topic (along with other topics). So i am sure i have other questions.

Where can i get my hands on some birds for training in the puget sound area? (I am in Tacoma)
What birds should i use? I do not know wich birds to use for training, quail, chuckar, phesant, pigeons, etc........

Thanks for any advice,
Pete

what kind of pup?    i went to a pet store (Northwest seed and pet) and bought a few Young pheasant and let them go in the back yard. let the dog chase them around for five min. then put the birds away.  but don't let the dog chew on them. don't know if that's good or not but it worked with my Griffin. he now gos nuts over birds. tried to make training as fun as possible so he enjoyed it as much as i did.

Lots of hunting typ breeds will just have the natural instinct to go for gamebirds..........I have noticed that the smell of a pheasant really gets them jacked too!

Gasman, send me a PM I live just across the narrows bridge and have or can get the birds you seek. I have always just had the birds in the yard and let the pup do what he naturally does. You will probably be surprised how quickly they figure out whats up :IBCOOL:.

Olddog and Birdguy, would you guys get me prices on the birds you have available. Either PM, E-Mail, or post up here if you would.

I would like to keep my pup interested in birds while i am training by having a bird to send him after atleast every other week.

Thanks
Pete

I've used the store-bought pheasant scent, and wetted down a dummy with it, or put some on a tennis ball.  Back that up with a pheasant wing, or skin, and they'll remember the smell. Then buy 'em some live ones at one of these preserves, and by the time you're done, they'll get the program.

Yes, i do this already....

I went to see "OLDGUY" yesterday, and picked up 3 chuckers. Going to take Hemi out this weekend and let him chase one around.

Hemi loved being in the flight pen with all those birds, he was in "Chucker Heaven". Of course i kept him on a lead.

Old barns, is one way. When your out driving around and you see a bunch of birds on a wire.  Look nearby there should be there home.  Alot of people will let you remove the birds for free.  Just ask.  If you dont see them daily then drive around and look for them . Get permission and go.  Night time with a head lamp. fishing net. dusk mask. gunny sack.   :)  I havnt done it in a few years but 20 30  birds was our average. Two people helps. :twocents:

or you could go down town ans sit on a park bench with some popcorn
