30/40 krag

Nice  I have a 30/40 Krag in lever action that I got from my dad when he passed. I take it still bear hunting and even sometimes deer hunting. Never seen my dad kill anything with it, but seen him and I have shot it many of times.

I'd love to find one of the repro 1895's in .30-40, I dont know why but I'd really like to get a goat with one. Just an itch I suppose.

I have a quick story. Was hunting with my brother down along the Methow River when I was 19. We had been swimming in the river the day before opening day of bear hunting season. I came up from the water and directly across the river there was a bear swimming around probably 40 yards from me. Grabbed my brother and we tucked in behind this root ball and watched it for a while swimming around. Funny thing is we didn't have a gun or even a knife even though we knew it was bear infested. We hunted the next day and didnt see anything in that spot. We decided to give it another shot the next day watching that hole from across the river. About an hour before dark I heard something roll a rock down the bank, slowly a bear made its way to the bank where I had a completely clean shot. I settled my front sight behind its shoulder and the gun went off and instantly dropped the bear. I take off into the river to go look at my first bear and I hear the bear let out a roar. It was a spine shot. I jacked another shell in and off hand put another one through the lungs and quickly put it down.

I have one ... it was my grandfathers and was left to me when he passed, I was 13. My Grandfather also sporterized it and made the stock himself. My mother told me stories how it was his favorite weapon and all the deer, elk and bear that he shot with it.

M-Ray that is a beautiful gun! The stock reminds me very much of a kit my Grandfather did. Bought a military Springfield 30-06 with a sporting stock he had to finish on his own. Still have the military stock somewhere...That rifle put a ton of dinners on our table.

jdb congrats on the gift that thing is super cool!  I wish I had stories of hunting with it but I only took it out once and the old weaver 4x32 scope fogged up about the time I was about to shoot a bear up on sawmill ridge about 1993. I have since replaced the scope with a bushnell 4x32 in an attempt to keep it as close to the way my grandfather had it. My dream is to one day take a bear with it since that was my grandfathers favorite animal to hunt and eat. I've been caught up doing my own thing each year but this thread has got me thinking that I should resurrect the dream! Thanks for that

Thanks, it could have been a kit that he had to customize to get that side clip to fit  The way mom always told the story it was "made by Dad" Oh BTW mom shot a couple deer with it and a bear. She also told me about how they were on the way to a Redmond high school play  and she missed the play to wait out a deer she spotted under an apple tree.
