Canvasback
« on: December 29, 2016, 06:07:08 AM »
I shot my first drake canvasback on Monday and immediately wanted to put him on the wall. But now that I'm looking at mount ideas I'm second guessing myself whether I should wait for a little better one? He's pretty white, but still has some gray on his back. What say you?

I've only shot one bull can and had it mounted. What's he look like underneath? Look and see what the characteristics of a mature bird are and decide from there

He's a bit mottled underneath, again, not pure white. Obviously not a full plumed bird, just not sure what a can looks like on the wall with a hint of gray to him.

Freeze and take to your taxi. Have them tell you if it's worth it or not after they skin it out. Worst case you donated a parts bird to them. The one I shot was mostly gray. I can take a pic tomorrow and show you. My buddy just had one done that was really white. I can have him send me a pic and show that one too

There seems to be big numbers of th em this year compared to most.  If you want the taxidermy job for art then wait for a better one.  If you want it to commemorate your first or something like that, the go for it.

You only ever get one first of anything.  And betting you'll get another bull canvasback, in better plumage, might have you waiting a long time.

I'd say mount it up and be proud of a great trophy.

I totally agree. I'm getting my 1st Bull Can mounted(this year's bird)and it could be a little more feathered out in white but it's still beautiful and I've waited a long time for this one. Shot two more this past weekend but both are no better than the one I've got in the freezer.

Thanks y'all for the pictures and input! I think I'm gonna go ahead and keep it in the freezer and if I don't shoot a better one by the end of the year It'll have a spot on the wall!

Here's mine, shot in 1981.  This was my second one, but the first dove and disappeared.  Both were on a public hunting ground medium sized marsh/pond in WI.  I have never seen another while duck hunting.

The back color looks similar to yours.
