Kettle Crest or Cascades?

Hello, I'm new to the forum and had a question that I've been pondering for quite some time.  I'm contemplating a Fall backpack hunt  and am having trouble deciding between a high hunt in the Cascades or the Kettle Crest.  I now live in Spokane and will be able to scout the Kettle Crest much easier.  Any thoughts on which area may be better for trophy mule deer?  By the way, this is a great website!  Finally, a place devoted to Washington Hunting.

Either can be good for big muleys but I think I would go where you have the ability to scout more often. So my vote goes to the Kettle Crest.

I'd go to where you can scout better.  THe better you know an area the better your chances of getting a good buck.

I was kind of thinking the same thing.  Now I just have to wait for the snow to melt so I can get out and stretch the legs.

I would not settle on only scouting where you are close and more familiar.  Have any weekends you can consolidate a camping trip with a hiking trip?  Get out and when you get the deer patterned and figure out where your buck is hunt that location.  Dont limit yourself... Plus if your family likes to hunt and hike you are killing two birds with one stone!  My instinct says scout where its the closest however you can get a lot of scouting done too.

 You might consider the Selkirks, as close as they are to you.

I will definitely consider the Selkirks.  I haven't hunted much up in that area.  Hopefully I can find a spot with semi open hilltops.

Was thinkin' the exact same thing.  I google earthed it and it looks pretty thick... even up high.  I'll save final judgement for this summer...

If you are interested in the Kettle Crest PM me some time I've hiked from Sherman to Boulder (down Hill). There is actually alot of really open ground due to the White Mt. Fire. You dont need to hike the entire piece. Fill you in more later...

Kettle Crest,

Most that do the high hunt do it for the adventure.  It' tough.
