Aim!!! try this aiming drill
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:58:35 AM »
Aiming is of vital importance when it comes to target shooting or hunting... but as I have said before most of us conciously trigger the release (not good) so to help with aiming and to show some of you just how dependent on that you are.. try this...........

stand 10 ft away from a a target.. draw back and aim for 10 sec at the bullseye..... just stare at the center.... DO NOT TRIGGER THE RELEASE... then let down and wait a minute or so and repeat.... alot of you will flinch alot once the pin is in the center because you have taught yourself to fire the shot when the pin is in the bullseye.. your mind says "NOW"!! but really all you should do is look at the center of your target, if you move off center keep looking, your mind will bring the pin back to the center.. and then the shot should just happen.... no "NOW"!!!   ater a minute try again.. keep doing this for a few days or until you can aim and and not flinch and want to make the shot happen.. then move back to 15 and repeat.. then 20 then eventually 20 yrds.. once you can aim for 10 sec at 20 yrds and not flinch.. you are ready to start shooting....... PM me when you get to this point and I will help you with the next step... master this and you will become a much better shooter/hunter

That's great, Hoyt. I'll give it a spin. Thanks for sharing.

Isn't this basically instinctive shooting?

What you describe sounds very much like throwing knives or darts where you don't consciously aim you focus on where you want it to go and relax into the throw.  I even did this when riding horses you "see" where you want to go first and then you just sort of go there when it all comes together correctly.  ;)

instinctive shooting is not aiming, its instictive.. like throwing a ball.. with a compound you have sights and you aim... but most people do not aim correctly or execute the shot correctly, this is a drill to help with both

If your flinching every time your pin touches the bullseye then you have target panic.  This is a good exercise to help break yourself of this malady, but I would be hard pressed to believe "alot of you will flinch alot once the pin is in the center."
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

if you punch the trigger most will.. and id say 90% of bowhunters dont execute a subconscious release. and target panic is alot more then just punching the trigger.. thats just one form of it

I shoot lots of tournament, and don't claim to never punch the trigger.
There are people that punch the trigger and there are people that lie about it. :) :) ;)

Yep.  Those that say they never have, andthose that say they quit.  Oh wait, that's the two kinds of liars about masturbation, right?

Anyway, good advice.  To group consistently, you have to have confidence when your sights are on target.  Thanks.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
