Bear Fat
« on: January 17, 2017, 04:21:09 PM »
Hi everyone. I realize it's not bear season right now, but I want to be prepared for next year. I'm not a hunter (although maybe I should become one?) & I'm looking to acquire some bear fat. Do hunters/taxidermists usually just throw the fat away? I'm in the Olympia area. Anyone know who I should reach out to?

Thanks.

My wife has made soap out of it when a friend shot one. I would talk to butchers that process wild game. That and find out who in your area bear hunts. Some of them can have a lot in the fall.

What you using it for?
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Some keep it, especially the fat around the kidneys (leaf lard).

Me and my buddies render it out and save it for cooking.

What are you planning for it and how much would you need?

Interesting idea. I'd be worried that my dog would feel the need to eat my boot if it had bear grease on it.

I plan to use it to make medicinal salves. Rendered bear fat is readily absorbed by skin & makes a silky smooth salve. Great stuff! I just figured if people normally threw it away, I'd be willing to pay a little money to take it off their hands.

I'm planning on using it for medicinal salves. Not sure how much I'd need.. I'd want to have a few quarts of lard when I am done rendering. I'm willing to pay some money for it, so let me know if you have any extra.

Thanks!

Sounds cool! Is it the texture different from lard in a way that affects the medicine?
I bet the bear grease gives the product additional street cred as well.

I'm currently out because nobody in my group killed one this fall, but if you pm me contact info I'll probably have some this spring. And it would be a gift! It's not really kosher to buy or sell wild game. You have to go kill it yourself or find someone who can give it you.
