Idaho draw tag
« on: January 16, 2017, 09:21:48 AM »
I have been reading the old Idaho regs trying to understand how the permit process works? What I want to do is put in for a tag in unit 13 for mule deer. My questions are if I was to put in for a mule deer tag and not draw would I then still be able to hunt white tails in that unit or any of the others? When is the time frame the permits need to be in and any idea when the knew regs come out? Any help would be really appreciated. I have had a hard time trying to understand Idahos process.

If you do not draw the tag you can still do OTC hunts. If white tail hunting in that unit is part of a general season (you don't have to draw it) you're good to go.

Leo is spot on. A major difference in Idaho from wa is if you do draw a mule tag in 13 that is all you can hunt. No hunting General hunts unless you buy a general tag also.

and unless they have changed things, it means you cant put in for any of the OIL hunts.   Putting in for special deer or elk excludes you from that draw.

I hunted that unit quite a few years ago.Lots of deer but there is very little access to public land-unless you have a connection to hunt some private or even access to the landlocked public I would not do it. Or you can hunt from a boat and get decent access from the river.

Thanks for the input. As I venture farther into this I have learned access has become limited in 13 and I may venture a lil south into 18 now for that reason. Looks like both units are similar as far as mule deer draw and season dates. Just looks Like 18 maybe even more on the steep side but a lot more access. I have been in the area once down to pittsburg landing. Fell in love with the country and seen a few deer.

So you can't put in for moose and special elk applications? One or the other? Doesn't seem right

correct-I like it that is why we actually have decent odds of drawing a moose, goat or sheep tag. You have to choose oil or elk, deer etc

Don't forget, Idaho has no points system so it's not that big of a deal if you're actually dedicated to trying draw a OIL to miss some years trying to draw the normal big game tags. There's enough OTC Idaho tags that you can still have good hunting if you don't draw a tag.

Yes...we can only hope. I did put in some written requests for rule changes this year...if they don't adopt, I'm going to circulate the request around some like minded individuals to see about getting some real change in this state. A draw system like Idahos would do wonders in this state for both draw odds and pressure.
