Median Magnification
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:12:31 PM »
What is the "Average" and " Maximum Average" magnification you spotting scope users typically see clearly while glassing big game at long range.  Long range being 1500 yards to say 2 miles.  Reason I ask is because I have heard and experienced that magnification over 30-40X really becomes quite weather restricted due to heat refraction, etc.  I'd like to hear comments like,  " Over 45X, my xxxx brand scope melds away due to refraction above 50 degrees."  It's time for me to buy a new scope and I'm really leaning towards say an Ultralite Nikon 15-30 50MM at about a pound rather than a big 60-80.  Price is not a deciding factor.  Weight vs Usability of magnification is the factor.  I'm becoming a wrinkled old man and I don't want to pack ego toys like big guns.  What really matters is having equipment that my old bones can continue to pack way high and use under most weather conditions between 4500-8500 feet in Sept-Oct.

Average for me: 25x... Max: 35x

My guess, with the scope you listed, you're gonna be limited to around 20x... maybe 25x unless conditions are optimal.  50mm is a limiting factor.  Don't know anything about the glass/coatings in that scope.  If you set on a 50mm ya may wanna compare to the 50mm Gold Ring.
