Klickitat County deer are have a tough winter
« on: February 02, 2017, 04:21:01 PM »
Snow for the last 2.5 months and the cold weather is probably having a negative effect on the deer herds.
Hopefully it will warm up soon.

I know most of the wintering grounds in the Wind River are under 3 feet or more of snow.

I think we are gonna see a huge hit in numbers this year and low fawn survival for sure

My usual hunting area in Grayback has been on the decline for several years. I never saw any fresh tracks in he snow when I was out on 7 Dec. and I hiked over 11 miles that day.
God Bless,
Scott

The deer have disappeared from my place. Have not seen any or any sign since the first ice storm about a month ago. Add that to about 18'' of snow left and more ice, awful tough on them!!

From the season proposals this year it looks like the game department agrees. Cutting a few buck tags in the Klickitat.

Western Pacific Timber has been logging their land the last couple of years (doing an ugly job of it  :twocents:). Since they started logging again I have not been seeing any deer only the occasional small track in snow. Maybe the young cougar track I crossed last year or pack of coyotes I heard barking and yipping have eaten all the deer or maybe the cattle that graze on the timber land have pushed them out. Who knows  :dunno:
God Bless,
Scott

Not the case thisyear! Hiking into the timberland to scout my camp thisyear saw over 100 poop piles everywhere and in the areai like i saw a few rubs from last yr and a real fresh one with scrapes on the ground in front of it. Saw some old bear sign too lookin on the upside for my season... One hopes anyway.
