17HMR info

I would like to get a 17HMR for plunking and grouse hunting looking at the Henry and Ruger. Any thoughts or recommendations would be great.

I've had several now. And have goon luck will all of them. My go to has been my Marlin. It cam factory with a bull barrel and would stack shots at 100 yards with a leopold on top of it. Really any of the 17s in my opinion  you can't go wrong with just how much you want to spend.

Guy we visit to shoot sage rats has a Henry and loves it. Brother in law has an savage accutrigger and it shoots lights out.

Most are finicky in the kind of ammo they shoot well. The Savage ONLY SHOOTS the Hornady 17grain accutips well.  Everything else wanders all over.

I've had great luck with my marlin heavy barrel. I also own the same gun in 22 lr and a marlin 22 mag with a thin barrel. All are of what I would consider acceptable accuracy for rimfire. Yes ammo changes can make a large difference

My savage shoots it all well.  It is awesome....I need to shoot it more often!!

I've got a Savage 93/17 HMR SS HB with thumbhole lam. stock and a new Savage A17 HB with Laminated stock.  The trigger in the A17 was horrid but I spent some time sanding and polishing to make it much more acceptable and it now shoots as well as my 93/17 which is usually right at or a little under 1in. at 100yds.  Have another family member that has a SS HB Savage 93/17 that will typically shoot .75-1in @ 100yds and my dad has an older Ruger 77/22mag that he replaced the barrel with a Lilja 17 HMR drop in barrel that will out shoot all of ours but comparing a top quality aftermark barrel with a match chamber to a stock factory chambered barrel isn't really a fair fight.

I've been around quite a few CZ 455 17 HMR's and those things always seem to shoot really well so if I was looking to buy a new 17HMR, it'd be a CZ 455 Varmint.

I shoot a few thousand rounds of 17's every spring and it's predominantly all been Hornady label 17gr ammo because I can usually buy it the cheapest, under $10 a box if you watch the sales, but I'm pretty sure CCI makes all the 17 HMR ammo so if you find one particular brand of 17gr Vmax ammo that shoots really well for you it's likely more related to it just being a good Lot # for your gun than it is what name is on the label.

I don't shoot one, but I have shot my Savage/Anschutz 22 magnum beside a LOT of 17 HMRs.  If I were interested in buying one it would be the CZ.

I had a Marlin 917 vs. one of the most accurate guns I ever owned. Shot a yellow jacket that landed on my target paper at 100 yards. It shot everything well except the Winchester 17gr vmax.

mine is a Ruger  fancy stock etc. trigger job. I think a model 77. 3.5X10 Leupold, shoots great.

My Savage 93R17 heavy barrel will put 5 shots inside a dime at 100 yards with 20 grn. bullets. Its so accurate it can get almost boring. Ive been target shooting and done the same as somebody else mentioned earlier. A yellow jacket landed on my target at a 100 and I shot it. Then I started shooting the plastic thumbtacks that held the target up.
