What ground blind (hub blind) do you really, really like?
« on: March 14, 2017, 03:43:46 PM »
I have a couple of the Ameristep Tent Chair Blind and they work really well if I have to pack them any distance, but shooting a bow, or a crossbow out of one just ain't gonna happen.  I was wondering if the deer would spook from the larger blind is why I went cheap w/the first one to try it out.  So long as it is brushed in and I leave it out it doesn't seem to cause much, if any alarm.

I bought a really a cheap one (Ameristep® Backcountry Ground Blind) and found out that it worked real well for some of the places I hunt.

I am going to buy a second one and since I know this is going to work out, I want to get the best one.

If possible would like to consider getting one that is a bit larger so I can have a kid inside w/me.  That isn't going to be an issue w/mod firearm or ML, but with bow it is going to need to be a bit bigger to work.

I've always been a fan of Gorilla blinds, but the last few trips over to Bearpaw he has put me in a Primos XXL blind.  Took awhile to get used to not having quick open/close windows like the Gorilla does, but once I got used to it I'm really digging that blind.  And, if I get a headache there is WAY more room to lay down until the pain killers take effect!  Could probably get three kids in that blind and still have room enough to shoot without making noise.  The other thing that surprised me was the darkness.  Absolutely the best at blocking out light I have ever used.  I'll probably buy a few of these for myself once the Gorillas get too bleached out.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I have the Primos blind luck blind and it fits my daughter and I in it.  I had to shim it up in the air on a log so she could stand and shoot out the window but it worked great.  When the kids were 9 and 11 all three of us fit in it for a couple of turkey hunts.

My brother in law has a primos double bull blind that we used in Montana for whitetail hunting and that worked great for the two of us and our gear.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Every father should remember that one day his children will follow his example instead of his advice.

Right on!  That is exactly the type of opinion I was looking for.  Thank you so much.

I have the Big Mikes Grounder 350.  Very big very durable it you stake it down.  Can easily fit 3 people or maybe 1 adult 3 kids.  Not very expensive.  Looks like it has been updated over the one I got a couple years ago.  http://www.barronettblinds.com/grounder-350-hunting-blind-with-bloodtrail-woodland-camo

:yeah:    I'm a Barronett convert.  I've got an Ameristep Bone Collector and the Grounder 350 is WAY bigger and MUCH less expensive!  you can even order barronetts from Home Depot...  :chuckle:

We hunt 3 people (2 adults, 1 kid) regularly in a Barronett comfortably, and I have even been in one with 3 adults, 1 teen.  THAT was tight, but it worked.  Archery, BTW.

I like the cheap ones, because you never know when someone is going to steal it. Cabela's has a great deal on a Primos blind right now. It's "blemished" so you get it for only $99. It's a good sized blind, same dimensions as their popular "Double Bull" blind which sells for $300.

I've been happy with my Double Bull, can't remember which model but have had a long time, still works great, easy and quick to set up and blends well into the background.

Those Primos XXL's have been my favorite blind, lots of room, decent features for the money. I got some good deals on them from Wing Supply. I'm thinking of trying a Baronette, this topic was a good reminder that I need to order one to try.

BP, hopefully this isn't a jack, but do you leave your blinds out for days/weeks at a time or set up daily?

My  :twocents: - Only animals I have ever had success hunting with daily blind setup has been coyote/fox when calling and antelope.  All others it took a few weeks for them to get used to it being there.  Ruined some dang good bear baits by setting up blinds after I started baiting instead of before.

Could work on turkey, but only time I've ever hunted turkey from a blind has been at BearPaw and he's already put them in place when I get there.

No expert on ground blind hunting but I've had mature whitetails (during rut) be fine with ground blinds when I brushed them in well.

Last year BLRman took a bear from a ground blind that was placed in clear view just that day.

I'll say that it's a good rule of thumb to have it established IMO though!
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

If safe on private land I prefer to have blinds out before season opens and left out until we are finished hunting each season. Because cattle sometimes tear up blinds playing around, I never tried double bull blinds or other more expensive blinds.

We've done OK setting up blinds the same day for quite a few different critters, but I suspect some of those critters may have been some of the less intelligent and are no longer part of the gene pool. I prefer leaving blinds out long term if possible but daily setup can work.

Hiding movement is one of the most important aspects of hunting IMO.

I put mine out on Friday and take down Sunday unless well onto private property where there is little chance anyone will see them.  Then I leave them for weeks.  Except the little chair blinds, I will take them out daily.

I think the reason this works for me with blacktails is there is a lot of agricultural activity going on on a regular basis.  Pruning etc and people piling up brush and stuff like that.  Not that the deer are not still very jumpy, especially mature bucks.  Actually I think the ones that are used to a lot of activity can even be just as skittish and watchful about coming in and they won't if they see any sign of people or dogs around.

Also, anybody ever seen a racoon decoy?  I have noticed that a lot of times when I see deer feeding after I have quit for the day and am out looking at where I know deer are going to be feeding, I frequently will see a racoon or two nearby.  I want to try one.  Maybe I will have to make a plywood one.
