Purchased the kids first deer rifle (and another rifle today)
« on: February 19, 2017, 06:57:02 PM »
Well since my 2 oldest kids are gonna be hunting deer for the first time, I got at least 1 rifle for theme so far
Found a used Remington model 788 carbine in a .243 at cabelas.  Came with a older banner scope.  They wanted 439.00 for it but got it for 350.00. Not too bad there.  I'll probably end up shortening the stock another inch since he's only 9. We will see!!

I have 2 daughters. At the age of 13 and 14 I bought them a Remington 700 .243.
I put a leupold 3x9 Vll on it and had a local gunsmith put a break on it. My two girls were very small framed at the time and didn't want the "kick" to alter the shooting what so ever. It literally has zero recoil. I wanted them to 100% concentrate on shot placement with zero distractions. Obviously they had hearing protection. That was Seven years ago and their shooting abilities now are amazing. My youngest is on her 6th buck. I too use that gun for local whitetail. Incredible accuracy and a pleasure to shoot minus the noise:)

My first rifle was a lefty 788 in 308, great gun but sold it as I learned to shoot the "right" way.

Very nice, now time to start building points in out of state tags and permits for them

Just picked up another rifle for the next kid.  Got a screaming deal on a remington model 7 synthetic stainless 7mm-08 with leupold base and rings for 300 bucks at cabelas.  Very good shape.   That's a damn good deal I couldn't pass up.

Very nice deal and great caliber!  Started my 11 yr old on the 243, then got him a 270 at 12, and he loves shooting it.  Put a limbsaver on it and it made a big difference.
