Market flooded with AR's
« on: February 21, 2017, 09:00:00 PM »
With so many company's making mil-spec uppers and lowers how long till we see a production AR-15 roll off the line for below $400.  They seem to be doing nothing but going down in price and everywhere you turn there is one for sale.  There are a few "brand names" holding value but how can you really justify dropping a couple grand on a noveske or similar firearm when you can buy a mil-spec gun for under $600 all day long.  Own quite a few AR platform firearms and they seem to be the only guns I actually worry I might not be able to sell for what I paid for them or more.

I was thinking about that recently.  Without the panic for ARs, what will the market trend toward?  I figure some will try to upgrade their AR-- look for the higher end mfg and closet the other for the next scare.

You have at least 4 years, hopefully 8 before the prices go nuts again.

I agree the only problem is that the lack lusters sales stifle development, is the stuff isn't selling, no reason to spend a bunch of time on R&D.

Not much need for R&D on a 60 year old design anymore.  I should probably just invest in defense distributed or some machining skills.

I've been hoping to see some real good deals in the used department.  Even on the classifieds here, guys are keeping the prices higher but hey'll come down eventually.

I anticipate that there will be several AR manufacturers that will go out of business over the next several years.  Supply and demand.

3D printing is replacing a lot of machining need.  I still prefer machining where parts see stresses though.

I think a lot of that has to do with the 2 tiered price of many components. You can buy a Palmetto State Armory ar for about as cheep as it gets. It will shoot  and meet mil spec requirements. I talked with a Army buddy of mine and Milo Special isn't really a threshold for Quality, it's more like a bare minimum. The great thing about an AR is they are modular.

We are in the golden age of ARs. Buy, build, tinker and have stories to tell your grandkids about when you could have an AR kit delivered to your house for $400 add a $75 lower and you are can have as many ARs as you want!

There's been more development of the AR platform in the last 10 years than in the prior 50 years combined. High demand = improvement.

At high prices and high demand.  However, there are diminishing returns, beyond a certain point is the point.  Now the main differences I see are mostly chotchkies.

We've seen a lot of improvement in the 1911 as well over 100 years.  Much more and it starts ceasing to be a 1911.

I see the flooded market as a great thing for us the consumers. When prices are at their highest, they do not have to differentiate themselves to make money.
Now with the market pricing in a spiral, they need to standout, make a better product, work hard at innovation to get the business.
The ones that don't, won't survive.

I can tell you the market fluctuates quite a bit in terms of AR's. and I don't just mean during election time. Basically the "mil-spec" AR's right now are so cheap because no one really wants them. I don't mean no ones buying them just everyone wants the Ultra light "custom" rifles like Taren, Noveski, Daniel Defense, Spikes Ect.

My first AR I ever bought was a Quad rail, flat to "mil-spec" gun, this was about 5-6 years ago. then everyone wanted that type of AR. Now AR technology has come a along way and people have come to realize "mil-spec" is a relative term and doesn't mean "the best". give it another 5 years and no one will want the light weight guns anymore because there will be some new toy out.

The best advice I can give is decide what you "need" and what would be "nice to have" and go from there. go ahead and make it an investment and pick what you want and don't worry about selling it down the line.

I packed around and shot a heavy Bushmaster for a long time and loved it but decide to try the "new" stuff. I decided I "needed" reliable and light. and it would be NICE to have fast as well. That lead me to the Spikes Crusader. yeah it was expensive but its the best AR I have ever owned.

Go to Palmetto State armory sight and sign up for newsletter.  They have specials every other day, some are silly cheap and you gotta jump on them quick before sell out.

I don't think that the reason they are so cheap is because everyone wants a more expensive higher end gun.  I think it's just because darn near everyone has 1-6 in the safe. I don't know to many people that don't own one now and most own multiple.
