Broke a side off...now what?
« on: February 26, 2017, 11:45:44 AM »
I was cleaning the garage and hit one of my European mounts. It fell to the ground and one side broke off. Pretty clean break. Is there a good glue to reattach or should I just pop the other side off and buy a mount kit for the horns?

If it were me, I would glue it up with a quality epoxy.

You could try going to the hobby shop and getting some super thick super glue and the activator spray. It dries the glue instantly when it's sprayed on it. I've used it a good bit on projects.

You think it would hold up a horn?

Drill a 1" deep or so hole in each side. Insert a fairly stout piece of wire in each side before gluing. Not foolproof strength, but it definitely helps reinforce the strength at the bond.

:yeah:
Or drill a bracket behind it.  I would reinforce it somehow.

Moved this over here for one of the taxi's to chime in.  There is a similar thread already in hear about glue for Euro mounts as well.  I will see if I can find it and attach the link.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

My kid broke a tine off one of my European mounts once. I drilled both sides about 1 1/2"-2" deep , used the biggest nail I could find at Home Depot and epoxied the nail in and the broke tine back on. Can't even see the break.
Be careful with Gorilla glue it expands as it cures.

That seems to be the general consensus on here. The break is in a good spot-under the end where the horn spreads out. Several of the suggestions have been for something metal. Would a wood dowel be the best thing?
